New Socal Spearfisher

Hey all, I started spearfishing at the beginning of the summer with some friends after years of interest but no follow-through. So far, I have just been using a polespear (6' JBL Paralyzer), but am in the market for a speargun now that I have a little money and have been sufficiently frustrated by the extreme difficulty of stalking close enough to get a kill with a polespear. Anyways, I am living in Westwood while I finish up my last year of school so if anyone is interested in going out let me know!

Re: New Socal Spearfisher

Welcome! Have you checked out the L.A. Fathomiers?

If you're looking for freediving/spear fishing buddies, perhaps you might try one of the local scuba clubs - some of the divers may also freedive/spearfish.

I just moved from Westwood to the Midwest :-( Enjoy your time in SoCal!!!!!

Cheers.

The Fathomiers are a good bet, but you should know that spearfishing on scuba is not looked upon with favor in SoCal. Many scuba divers frown on spearfishing anyway, and most serious spearfishermen do it while freediving.

And while many spearfishermen would try to tell you that they don't use scuba because its "not sporting" or some such BS, the fact is that our most desirable species, white sea bass and yellowtail, don't like bubbles very much anyway. You can get a lot more of them freediving.

I'm in the same boat as you, transitioning from scuba to freediving.. and I will prob go to the next fathomiers meeting, just to find some people who do what I am trying to do.

To bad on your choice of screen name though! ;-)

Go Trojans!
