I was recently 'baptized' as it were into the world of spearfishing/snorkelling. And Cheers! to Erik for spending the time discussing freediving with me as well.
It was out to West Twin Lake (I think), Alberta, on September 17 where I speared the meanest 1/16 pound Perch you've ever seen with Erik's smooth, sure-fire OMER. There were several large Jack prowling the depths and I could tell they were daunted by my natural abilities in the water and by the fierce strokes of my dog-paddle. Yes, yes, they were shocked and appalled... er, I mean awed. It could only have been better if my front sinus wouldn't have wanted to explode upon diving a few meters down. Must have been the milk duds I had the night before. I have spent time canoeing Saskatchewan's Northern lakes and rivers and I can already see spearfishing becoming an integral part of those voyages. The pristine and isolated Canadian Shield lakes and waterways are just waiting for a spearfisher to explore. I try to imagine what the ocean experience would be like, but no doubt fail to touch the reality. Either way, I'll work on dive numero two before I get too far ahead of myself. I hope to become a solid presence in this community over time and I'll try to learn the lingo as quickly as possible. It's an amazing 'other world' of which I was completely unaware! It is only slightly disappointing that I began at the end of the season, but I gather this is the time for collecting gear to drool over until the ice breaks (or I break it). On that note, any advice on essential gear to start with is more than welcome and appreciated. Cheers to all! jolly Last edited by jolly_c; September 23rd, 2006 at 15:51. |

Fins, mask, snorkel and a one way ticket to Hawaii. Sorry, I couldn't resist. Aloha from the other free diver born in Saskatoon Bill

Hi! Nice to meet you! We'll probably see you sometime next summer- I also come from Saskatchewan (Regina), but now live out in BC (kamloops). Makes a good diving stopover on the way to Van and VI!
