hello fellow enthusiasts! i am new to the deeperblue but i sense a bond of familiarity through the stories that i have read--i am glad to be here. I started out searching for a great spearfishing adventure as a gift for my brother's 40th birthday and i wound up here! i must say that i could use some help from some of you veteran travelers. i would like to travel to the carribean on a long weekend in december and spear some fish. i have looked into jamaica and other places but have gotten no responses on the e-mails that i have sent out. does anyone have any suggestions? thanks for the help.

Hi Mark, Welcome to DB: its a good place.
Regarding a spearo vacation, you will need to find a local spearo to show you the local ropes. Most resorts take a dim view of spearos and too much of the Caribbean has suffered from some pretty extreme overfishing, for which spearo's bear some of the blame, and get blamed for more than they deserve. The Bahamas are probably your best bet, but it is slings only there. If you are pretty independent, You can rent a house and a whaler in Marsh Harbor, Abaco. That and a little local knowledge will keep you in seafood. You might consider the Keys. There are a few charter spearo operations. You should be able to find them using the search function. Careful of bad weather that time of year. Good luck with your search. Connor

I like the Exumas in the Bahamas for the variety of options esp in the Winter months - in the charter and boating arena we always advise people to head south of Nassau in winter for better beach, boating and diving options. The winds can blow out of the North for days at a time and will vary between NE and NW. In the Exumas you can always find a sheltered area somewhere and the visibility is always excellent ...100ft+++. check out Staniel Cay and Sampson Cay (both have websites). Small boats are available at both.
Connor...don't mean to diss you on the Marsh Harbour scene, but the Abaco Sound can get really unpleasant in North wind conditions ( never mind the offshore area)...this area is best in the early summer (June and July). B.

You're right Blumon. Farther south is always better that time of year, same as the Keys. I didn't know that small boats were available in the Exumas.
Inside in the Abaco's can be pretty productive for seafood, but local knowledge is pretty important. From what I remember, the same is true in the Exumas. Connor

Local knowledge is real important...I always depend on a "local" to get things going. Hiring a local guide for the first couple of days on any trip in a new area, helps dial me in to the 'heartbeat' of where, when and how to go... if you don't live there all the time then it's the quickest way to maximizing your visit! Gotta love the Bahamas. B
