Hello, new to this forum

Hello DeeperBlue,
I am returning to freediving and spearfishing after being away for about 16 years. Last year was my first season back. I was surprised at the difference time has made. I workout 4-6 times a week, spin classes 3 times a week, weights, and elliptical machines twice a week at least. I don't smoke and considered myself in decent shape for 47 years old. Then, I tried to get deeper and stay a little longer. Reality time!!! 18 feet was my best and my time sucked. Just enough to shoot a tautog and return.

So, any suggestions to a workout that will improve my time and depth. I bought something that looks like a mouthpiece to practice breath-hold time. Has anyone tried it?

Also, I was running but I have a lower back issue (lost a disc) that prevents that.

I was considering breath holding while cycling on stationary bike? It is an-aerobic performance we are after right?

Thanks for any advice.
Kevin

Hi Kevin welcome to DB, where you from?
Well done for keeping so fit, in fact I am the same age as you & keep up a general level of fitness but personally find actually being in the water the best way ahead.

Hi Kevin,
There are differing theories about whether intense cardiovascular training is good for freediving. I've pasted a couple of links to the issues you raise in your post. The first one is about the "mouthpiece" you talk about - it sounds like an expand-a-lung device.

The second one is a discussion on the benefits/drawbacks of cardio training as related to freediving.

There are more threads on this, use the search function a lot as there is hidden treasure in the archives of this forum!

Welcome,

Kevin welcome to DB.
As for the fitness thing with a name like Podge I’m not really in a position to answer that one.

Re: Hello, new to this forum

Thanks for all the replies. You guys are great! I am having spring fever here, in fact I ought a new gun today, an ABB 36 inch mahogany with a break away spear tip. I want to go shoot some fish so bad!!!
You are right about the expand-a-lung. My wife is an RN and the respiratory therapists used a similar devise with a floating ball to expand a patient's lungs after surgery. The patient blows into it as the resistance of the ball increases, they blow more. I suspect the expand a lung works the same. Whether it improves performance,,,,I 'll have to see.
I am quite impressed by this forum.
I live in RI and dive Sachuest Point, Ocean View Drive, and Second Beach.
I have a 16 ft Carolina skiff and a couple of kayaks. I am looking for a dive partner, if anyone in this area would like to join me.

Kevin,

Welcome to DB. Step by step, one day at a time, & be consistant with your training...your times will increase. Much is mental, knowing your body & getting into the "zone".

As always, have a buddy & play it safe!

Gene
