What up from SoCal

Hey everybody....Looks like a great site with a lot ok knowledge.

I'm looking to start spearfishing in the next month or so, and so am learning the theory before application.

I'll probably be hitting Huntington down to San Clemente, spending most of my time in either Newport or Laguna.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice, about anything related really, it will be appreciated.

Thanks

Whats up wax. I'm pretty new to spearing, but can say that you will find alot of good information within this forum.

I saw in another thread that you were diving at Creek; how is it over there? Never thought of diving there because of all the people surfing...but I guess if its flat...kinda like now...

Re: What up from SoCal

Not much experience, but I thought Creek was good - I went in between the two beaches, directly out from the Lifeguard tower in the rocks - maybe about a hundred or so yards out. There are no surfers there because of the rocks. I was there around 5pm, and only stayed for about 40 minutes, but saw all kinds of fish. The rocks and deep grass were full of perch and calico, and I saw a couple big corbina. Visibility wasn't great - maybe 7 feet or so, but it was running from what seemed like 8 - 15 ft deep, so it actually worked. It was also raining, and so the viz would probably be a lot better on sunny days. There was also some issue with the waves and tides throwing me around in the rocks, but I'm a decent swimmer and was able to manuever fine.

The walk sucks of course, but it was definitely fun, and definitely worth checking out to see if you like it.

I might have to do that since I only live about 15 min from there. Creek picks up pretty much all swell directions though- seems like there would be lots of surge.

Does the reef extend out past the point at all?

Not sure - didn't do too much exploring. I know it extends at least 100 yards out from the shore, as that is about where I stopped when finding the fish, but from there seemed to only run 20 yards or so accross.

It was very surgy, somewhat compounded by the time of day. I am going to go back when it is a little calmer and check out the spot a lot better. I'll keep you posted. Let me know what you find if you hit it before I do.
