Emmanuel,
Anche il kit mamba vieta tutto il acque di penetrare la canna, sparare fuori dall acqua non e piu benno per gli fucile. La resistenza dall acqua sul aste frena in piu il percorso e evita che scoppi. Shane

This is the largest Dusky grouper taken in the Mediterranean in a long time, I saw the picture at www.apneamagazine.com and talked to a friend of mine about it who knows the diver.
At 35Kg's (roughly 77lbs) it's as big as the current world record from Brazil although two divers worked together to land it. I'm sure many larger fish have been taken over the last 30 years by Med divers but these days it's rare. The species, Epinephalus marginatus, has always been the most sought after grouper by Med Spearos. An interesting debate ensued on the forum asking whether the Sardinian diver, Mariano Satta, felt any remorse for shooting such an unusually large specimen whose sightings now a days over just 5Kg's are rare. His answer was very nice as he showed how the same buddy whom he'd speared cernias (groupers) with 30 years ago had been there with him again this time. It occured to him that after spearfishing for 30 years in the same waters, hunted by thousands of seasoned Med spearos and commercial bottom longliners year after year, the fish must have come into 20 meters (60ft) from a deep nearby drop off. It was a rare circumstance where the lucky opportunity and privilege many of us spearfisherman sometimes take for granted presented itself. Clear waters, Mark |

That's a monster of a dusky, Mark! We call them "rofos" in greek and it is one of the toughest fish to land. The amazing thing is that they are very similar to our red grouper which is about the dumbest fish around here. My personal record is 22 kg caught in 1991 but I have heard of some fish bigger than 35 kg. This was at least 15 years ago. Here's my fish:

Here in the straits there have been a few over the 35 kilo mark caught in the last 10 years. Npne of them have been homologated for the record

Hey guys,
Angelos, nice rofos I shot one once in the head in the Med with a slip tip (not wise to shoot grouper with slip tips) and it was big, it never engaged and actually bent the SLIP TIP! Shaca, I think you live in the Paradise for Med Spearos. I've heard from others Gibraltar is out of control. A lot of exchanges of nutrients with flow from the Atlantic Ocean and Med Currents meeting probably provides ideal habitat for lot's of species to grow big. One day I'll come visit you, I bet the Dentex are huge there! Since Marco Bardi never applied for his world record after spearing one of 10Kg's I think you should try to take advantage of it in 05'. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays guys if I don't talk to you before 2004 is over with Clear waters, Mark Last edited by Mark Laboccetta; December 20th, 2004 at 23:19. |
