Azapa it's not normal to find such cool water. It may happen, because the area is exposed to Mistral winds lasting 3 to 5 days (never less), and they always bring on a high thermocline for tow or three days after.
But you haven't been lucky to say the least. The average water temp in may is 18°c along the 24 hours (warnmer du4ing the day). In July the average water temp is 24 degrees much warmer in sunny hours).

Thanks for the tip, I've got a 5/3 for UK waterskiing and a shorty for surfing so I'll take both.
We've finally opted for staying in Porto Conte - mad I know cus it's a national park but the accommodation looks fantastic and cheap and comes with internet and bikes. We've also decided to hire a car than pay for transfers so we'll be able to travel up to the north coast for spearing. Porto Conte? Ok it's marine park no spearing) but Torre del Porticciolo is very close (just out of the marine park: spearfishing legal!!!) and I've been recommended this place for spearfishing, both on the left and right of the tower. I'll post something more specific about these locations later.
Hope you'll enjoy it. More things to know? Vermentino (white wine), Cannonau (red wine), pecorino, sheep milk cheese made in many many ways. fresh, aged, spiced, smoked etc etc etc.

Uh, I forgot the local wines: Vermentino (white, better cool) and Cannonau (a stout red). And Porceddu (roasted pork).

I Just came back from Sardegna on 4 May. The weather was great but the water was still cold so fish were tough to find. We mainly fished the outside of Stintino. Even fishing from boat with one of the best local spearfishers (Antonello Gadau- aka-Lupensub) we were only able to take home a stringer of Cefali, Mostella, Saraghi, and scorfani. We also saw some small Cernia (Grouper) but they were only aroud 2-3 kilos each so we decided to leave them for later. Our host saw some Dentice at around 30 meters but they did not want to cooperate. I'll be back in Sardegna for the first 2 weeks of July but up in Capo Testa (Santa Teresa di Gallura). CAN'T WAIT!!!!!
I'll Have to deal with fishing here in Rome area till then. Tomorrow should be good. In the pic, I'm the one in the back left. ciao!!

Heya, Sorry I haven't posted for so long. I went to Sardinia at the beginning of May...wow what a beautiful place! Baking sunshine all week which apparently is unusual then, as Calinitalia said, the water was a bit cold for the fish.
We were staying in Maristella, Porte Conte – a protected zone, so the hire car was invaluable. We spent most of the week hopping round the bays to the North. We found some fairly decent sized fish off the rocks at Porticciolo. We drove south to Bosa hoping to find bays along the way but it was mostly steep cliffs. At one point I was perch high on a cliff face with a makeshift sun shelter of towels and t-shirts and my boyfriend had to climb down to go spearing! Other sites said that previous years there had been huge numbers of jellyfish but we I didn't see even one. When I've got a bit of time I'll post some useful photos. Thanks for all your help/advice before I went.

Hi Everyone,
I just got back from another trip to Sardegna. 11 days this time at Capo Testa (Santa Teresa di Gallura), rented a house right on the cliffs with Corsica in clear view, awesome. I did not get to fish as much as planned due to an accidental ear injury on the 3rd day of fishing  . That put me out of commision for 4 days. Got lots of nice Sarago up to 1,2 kg and spigole (bass) up to 1,5 kg along with other various types of fish. Saw good numbers of Orate but they were very nervous. The water temp was nice and the thermocline was usually around 25 meters +-. We had a couple days of intense Mistrel winds which put this area off limits due to the high seas and strong currents that rise up due to the channel with Corsica (Bocche di Bonifacio). Saw a few nice Dentex +- 4 kg but they wouldn't come into range  . I hope to be back on the island in September and October but till then it's Lazio and Toscana. Ciao!!!!!!!!

Well after having to abandon my plans for a sardinia trip last year, i'm now booked up for a trip this May :-)
We're going to stay at Isola Rossa which i hope puts us in a good spot for spearfishing, photos, etc. also not too far from the golf course on the NE corner for the better half and my son, so we're all happy :-) Once again thanks to Spaghetti for the valuable info on the area, even if it took me an extra year... One more question - do you need a license to spearfish there? Capo Testa looks superb if the weather plays kind... gonna have to find out about hiring a weight belt.

No in Italy you don't need a license for spearfishing in the sea: it's natural predation. I'll keep you posted about Isola Rossa and Capo Testa soon as I gather some valuable info from the spearfishing community over here. (learn this word and don't forget it: Vermentino) ;-)

Hi Jonny,
you will not need any licence for spearfishing in Italy. Every small town has at least one diving shop, you can ask about renting weights. I just bought 10k and left them there. I remember one year where it was difficult to get weights in August, they were just sold out. I also found that you can find all equipment at good prices on the Island.
