After a drive through precarious fog this morning I was met by a beautifully eerie mist rising from the surface from Vortex Spring (the water is about 65-68F). More eerie still I heard the howl of wolves on the early morning air. Wait a minute. Wolves? We don't have WOLVES in Florida. Ok well yes we do, there is a wolf, tiger and other exotic animal rescue in Ponce de Leon. It was actually very nice to hear the wolves. I enjoyed their song for a few minutes of solitude, I was the only diver at the...
Yesterday was probably the last warm day we will see on the Panhandle. It was sunny with just a hint of a breeze and best of all there was NOBODY at the spring when I rolled in around 7:30am. I think there was one diver in the water down by the cavern, because I could see bubbles, but there were no OW SCUBA classes kicking silt. I got my choice of parking space and Nik pulled in right after I got there. I of course reveled in the fact that I won the "race" to the spring yet again but we...
Well I didn't get eaten by a shark or anything but it wasn't a good diving day either with one little thing after another. My gag reflex was front-and-center this morning, which is not conducive to using a snorkel. I imagine it was being overzealous because I had a migraine Wednesday and was stuck in bed all day. If you are one of those fortunate people who doesn't have migraines it feels kind of like having white-hot railroad spikes inserted into your skull for about eight hours. When I have them...
Yesterday all I could think about was going diving today. I had my truck all packed before I went to work. I have been being very careful about what I eat lately because I would like to become "less buoyant" so I normally avoid refined carbohydrate products like pasta and bread. However, I decided it would be prudent to have some udon noodles for dinner so I could, hopefully, have energy for diving without really eating anything in the morning, other than a protein shake. Since my sinuses...
It was overcast this morning on the Panhandle with a slight breeze and a perfect October temperature in the low to mid 70s F. I rolled out of bed at an ungodly hour and drove over to Vortex Spring to meet a local freediver named Nik. I was a little nervous because I am NOT Little Mrs. Social Butterfly and I met Nik on youtube.com of all places (to see Nik's cool videos, which may or may not include some DeeperBlue.net members go here YouTube - sofabike's Channel). I was also not that enthused about...
