Swim on your side.

Erik, others: Comments on best arm strokes for monofin surface swimming? For pool workouts and competition (surface)?

Thanks!

Re: How to use a monofin at the surface

Swim on one side at a 90 degree angle, with the lower arm extended in front of you and the other arm tight to your side. Switch sides and adjust your head approximately 45 degrees so that you can breathe- it works no matter what side your snorkel is on.
If you're in the pool just switch at an even amount so that you don't undertrain muscles on the opposite side.
We're talking pure monofin swimming here- not butterfly swimming or any other technique training arms.
In open water I always found this the best way to swim IF I needed to move quickly or was doing the movement for cardio training ie: swimminmg against the current in a river. If I was just cruising, floating and looking, then I'd just stay horizontal, and bend at the knees at appropriate times to keep the fin underwater. 'Bad' technique, but appropriate for the circumstance.
Cheers,
Erik

here is another surface video i have bookmarked at youtube. he's swimming at the surface. some parts of it he looks like he's streamlining, then he sort of crawls a bit to take a breath.
