Re: Mares Snub Nose Competition Line Spear gun

I have the same model. I have 3 wraps on mine, so about 5.5ft.

I'll have to look for the manual.

I just push it against a rock, but if you are local SF Bay Area you can have my loader.

I just pump it up about once a year if it does not penetrate well. I store it muzzle down and give it a drop of oil about once a month.

There are Spearos that are experts here that will give you the exact info you require.

Thank you for your quick respond, I'm preparing the line shock and I never tough of the rock, sounds like a great idea, but it could be practical, thank you for kind offer about the shaft loader, but unfortunately I'm not in the area right now, but thank you.

I'm getting ready for my next trip to Acapulco, and I really want to try this spear gun along with other new stuff I bought for this trip, I will be thankfully If some of the Pros (experts) out there, send me some helpful advice about the manual for this spear gun and also where can I get one of those manometro (pressure checker) to check the right pressure on the spear gun
(I hope is not that expensive)
Thank you

Re: Mares Snub Nose Competition Line Spear gun

As far as the owners manual, there is one on the Mares pure instinct website. Here's the link to the page where you can download it from: Mares - Pure Instinct

I'm not sure where you can get a manometer in the US but I do know they cost $50+ from Europe with out shipping.

I would recommend getting a shaft loader or making one, I have a couple made from 1/2" PVC tubes that are about 3" wide (long). I'm not sure how many bars or psi are in my mini sten but I can tell you that it can't be loaded with one hand. Here's another link to where you can order some shaft loaders: Accessories - ScubasWorld
I would recommend getting the loader with a metal insert so the shaft tip doesn't get stuck in the plastic part of the loader. If you do go for a $5 loader, definitely buy the Seac model instead of the Cresssi. The Cressi is the biggest PITA IMO and really gets stuck in there.

Cool gun! Pay attention to all the terms used in describing Pneumatics. 15 PSI is about 1 atmosphere, so your really looking to pump the gun 15 atmospheres. Please post pics of all the critters you hammer, good luck on you trip!

Re: Mares Snub Nose Competition Line Spear gun

Here's a link with some reels: Reels & Lines - ScubasWorld
If you can spend the money, definitely get the OMER reel with the round clamp for pneumatics. This website also has the Mares Cyrano reel available.

If in doubt, please give them a call as they have a lot more stuff at the store than what's listed on the website. The reel I have requires special hydraulic clamps that have to be clamped with a unique plier...?

Here's a link for the manometer: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?tt=url&trurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maoris ub.it%2F&lp=it_en&.intl=us&fr=yfp-t-100-s

You'll need to click on enter in the middle of the page, then click on kit on the left tab, it's under kit manometer.

I don't see the manual for the Mares Snub Nose.
I was thinking to get a copy of the original owners manual for the actual spear gun, but I guess the manual of the Mares mini sten is similar right ???

Please let me know.
Thank you

Re: Mares Snub Nose Competition Line Spear gun

Correct, the mares mini sten is the same in length and internal parts. They both use a 8mm spear and have a 13mm inner barrel.

It takes 130 strokes to charge an empty SnubNose to 15 atm, 170 for 20 atm, 210 for 25 atm, and 240 for 30 atm.

I have a Mares Shorty and I made a spare shaft loader just in case I was to loose one underwater. I made mine out of a 1/2" piece of starboard. Any kind of nylon would work. I cut the shape to fit my hand and drilled a 3/8" hole about 1/2" deep to fit the point of the spear. Then rounded the edges with a router. Works great.
Happy Hunting.
