Re: Nutritional value of Bass/Mullet/Yellow Fin Tuna/Mackeral/...

Has anyone read the latest news about mercury content in tuna?

Re: Nutritional value of Bass/Mullet/Yellow Fin Tuna/Mackeral/...

I haven't heard anything new recently but last I heard pregnant women were advised to be careful (any news you'd care to share with us Island?).

I found these sites:
Food Standards Agency - Mercury in fish <-- high level
NRDC: Mercury Contamination in Fish - Eating Tuna Safely <-- detailed

I also seem to recall that some folk have a gene that makes it more difficult for them to excrete mercury. This came up when they tried to link vaccinations to autism a few years ago (apparently they had been using a mercury based compound as a preservative in the vaccines). Prior to that, I was always led to believe that humans could not excrete mercury and that it built up in the body, particularly in the brain - leading to Mad Hatters' disease or Minimata's poisoning (after the Japanese town that was so poisoned by pollution).

Re: Nutritional value of Bass/Mullet/Yellow Fin Tuna/Mackeral/...

Most organisms accumulate heavy metals.

The higher up the food chain the more the metal is accumulated.
As animals eat each other they accumulate more and more mercury. It's a process called bioaccumulation.

The trick is to not eat fish that feed from polluted waters.

Grey mullet are particularly bad because they can congregate in harbour waters where they absorb mercury and lead and all sorts of cr*p from the shellfish that live on the structures.

Open ocean species: Tuna, mackerel, etc. are not so bad because the pollutants out there are much more dilute.

Just be sure you know where it comes from.

Re: Nutritional value of Bass/Mullet/Yellow Fin Tuna/Mackeral/...

All good things in moderation.

I started eating oatmeal everyday to see if i could lower my cholestrol. While I was at it I put flax in there to boot. It worked! lowered my count by 10 points. So I started reading healthy and find out flour is a big culprit. I now grind my own and use it right away and I feel a whole lot better. I now feel like my supplements are working. Also I started eating sprouts great stuff! Now when i do have a nice seafood dinner it feels like i just ate a powerhouse. You guys ever do wheat grass juice Im thinking about a juicer?

Eating vegetarian (esp. vegan) really brings the cholesterol down. Milk & eggs are like meat for cholesterol - a vegan diet includes none of those, and so no cholesterol.

Not sure about wheat grass but I knew a guy that once worked in a health food store in California & he said lemon grass juice was very popular. It is a laxative -- perhaps that's how those Californians stay so slim. He used to drink a green shake in the morning that had soy lecithin in, it looked & tasted surprisingly good. I think the idea of the lecithin is that it helps emulisfy fats & stops it forming aterial plaques -- whether it works, I cannot say.

Smile The return of delicious, oily mackeral

By the way, we had the most fantastic mackeral last night. They were the best looking and tasting mackeral I have ever eaten. All the mackeral I have eaten in recent years (even those I caught freshly myself) have been smaller, less oil and less tasty than I remember eating as a boy. I thought maybe that bigger, better mackeral had been fished out. I was even beginning to doubt my boyhood memories. Not sure why - perhaps the time of the season - but these were bigger, plumper, oilier and more delicious than any I have had before. Excellent

It seems possible to me that cholesterol may be high or low, but it's the blood flow that counts, i.e. blood pressure. If that's the case, it might be effective to prevent whatever makes the stuff stick to the arteries in the first place That would be worth a look, maybe.

I once met a fellow who made green pulpy drinks for his lunch. It was pretty gross, because he let it drip into his beard really seemed to enjoy it, though.

Go wheat grass land shark. That stuff is fast acting. very sweet, but it gives a good energy buzz without the crash.

That sounds interesting. I must admit that eating grass does not at first sound enjoyable.
