California Spiny Lobster Season Coming Up

So far I haven’t seen any lobster while freediving in Malibu. I would like to be able to find them by spiny lobster season (Saturday preceding the first Wednesday in October for us here in California). Do they hide out anywhere in the shallows where free divers can catch them or are they only found in deeper water?

We have been very succesfull in freediving for the bugs in Orange County area. We just scope out the rocky areas during the day, then hit them at night. We can usually find them in 10-25 foot depths. It all depends on the tides, temps, time of season, and weather conditions.

Good Luck!

lonestar- While you are diving during the day look for cracks in the
rocks. Then make a dive down and stare into each of them. I bet you have been diving with lobsters all along. The trick is to get the legal sized ones into your bag. During the night, they come out of the cracks and crawl around on the bottom. Good luck, I'll be out on Friday night with the rest of the bug eaters. Don't forget your fishing license and gauge. I have a gauge that fits on the front of my flashlight(a must have!).
