Bottom trawling to be banned in SoPac.

I realize that this isn't the entire ocean, but it's a big start.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | S Pacific to stop bottom trawling

That's great news! A few weeks ago I saw a disgusting satelite image of about sixty trawlers doing their damage in the south china sea. It looked like a fleet of tractors turning over the soil in a field - because of the sediment that gets stirred up.

I hope that more nations follow.

That's disturbing -- I bet we'd be horrified if we knew a fraction of what is going on out there. With new technology, engineering, materials, etc. our ability to destroy ecosystems has never been so great. I shudder whenever I see huge earth movers being trucked down to the West Country.

The conservationists are destroying ecosystems too. Some bright spark just reintroduced beavers to England, not far from here, now they're tearing down 80 year old trees in time honoured beaver fashion - what a surprise! (Wolves was the best one though -- you can imagine how much those were missed over the last few hundred years. Watched an interesting program on animal attacks yesterday, a lone wolf or dingo will happily & persistently tackle a child or small woman apparently).

Good to hear they're stopping the trawling though.

Re: Bottom trawling to be banned in SoPac.

Your first place is a local sporting goods store that sells fishing regulations. If that doesn't help, you will have to call the Dept of Fish and Wildlife (or whatever name it goes by down thataway). Probably you will be restricted to gar the like. It's unlikely that B.A.S.S. would put up with taking gamefish.
