reverse squeeze help

over a year ago a suffered a barotrauma in the ear in question but have dove many times since then without problems. One of my ears has always been a little "thicker" and slower to clear than the other. Last weekend while freediving on a few of my ascents I noticed that ear squeaking and seeming like it was being slow to re-equalize and even felt a little pain, so I sat the rest of the day out. I am thinking of diving again this weekend but am I in any danger? This ear still feels thicker than the other but can clear without forcing it. So here's my main question, When I am ascending will it help if I open up my e-tubes using my muscles or valslava to prevent reverse squeeze injuries from happening?
