Pulled calf muscles

I couldn't find a form for "health", so maybe this is it. I've resumed diving after a painful absense and find that I'm pulling or straining or tearing or whatever my calf muscles almost every time out.

It happens when sprinting...or more specifically when terrified, the old "oh ***** gotta split" moments. Which are bad times to suddenly have your calf cramp up and start hurting. It's always well up toward the knee where it happens. So far the pain hasn't lasted more than a day or two, but I'm wondering if there is a way to prevent, by either shortterm or longterm methods, this sort of muscle problem. Other than eating bananas, which I do, several daily.

Thanks
