Okay huzit all Cape town divers! Anyone been in the water lately?
Went for a quick dive (no gun) this past weekend at Oudekraal and it wasn't too great, but I think things are looking better and better. Here's a question: What fish have you all seen while diving on the Atlantic seaboard (from hout bay to blouberg area)? I'd like to find out exactly what's out there. Not necessarily for spearing, but just for interest. So far, i've seen (besides ray and shark species and mammels): Hottentot Strepie/Karanteen (or shoals of something very similar) Mullet Cape gurnard (in the kelp) Smallish brown fish with deep, but thin body and big eyes (quite common - can't remember the name now) Light orangey brown fish with pale spots (quite common - can't remember the name now) Heard about kabeljou being speared at melkbos, and also rumours about kabeljou once being caught off harbour wall at waterfront. Heard rumours about yellowtail off Llandudno, and even off sea point (further out to sea). Snoek, caught from boats of course.. Will be cool to hear about anything else??? |

Hi Paul,
The deep thin body fish is a Milkfish or Jutjaw. The orangey brown fish is a Butterfish. Have a mate who has shot yellowtail off Oudekraal, and another who saw Longfin chasing baitfish behind the backline off Llandudno a few years back. White Stump and Geelbek can be had at Melkbos as well. And lets not forget the infamous Klipvis ! ![]()

I dont know if this is the right place, but here goes...
Spear-fishing buddy(s) needed My brother will be in Struisbaai from 07 October to 22 October 2008 and he is looking for some spear-fishing buddy(s) to join him. He is renting a house by the harbour for his honeymoon and it will be him and his wife. He is an accomplished spearo with many years experience and Cat-C qualified skipper. He will be using my boat, a 17ft Kosi Cat with 2 x 50HP Yamaha’s. He has enough spear-fishing gear for 2-3 spearo’s. He knows the spots in that area very well. Unfortunately he moved to Mpumalanga many years ago and has no connections in the Cape anymore. All he is looking for is some spearo’s that can dive with and help with the boat. Make contact with me an i will put you in touch with him, as he is not a member of this forum yet. Unfortunately i'm not in SA and cant join him. Thanks |

Hello Trompie, I dont really know any regulars of that area. But there is a place called Extreme Spearfishing in the shopping centre where the spar is. He can talk to the owner there as he does alot of trips in the area. Its not exactly what your looking for but its a start...
