Cressi-Sub SL100 verses Mares Cyrano 970

Hi Everyone
This is my first post , Im from Western Australia and Im currently staying near Cairns in Queensland ,My absolute favourite pastime is spearfishing so far Ive just been doing shore dives with a sea hornet lazer . Ive scored some nice coral trout flathead & a cray .Ive just bought a Cressi SL100 so its probably too late to be asking this question but can anyone offer an opinion on how these 2 guns compare to one another (mares cyrano 970)? Ive been told the thicker shaft on the cressi is an advantage when loading (bent shafts) and also for increased velocity in the water. also I was wondering how much damage it will do to the tip if shooting fish under ledges with the power reduction on , compared to my old gun ? (I think its about a 800mm single 20mm rubber)

Ive teed up with some spearos up here to go out to the barrier reef for my first offshore dive , hopefully this week so Im very excited about that , hopefully I will see some Mackerel or Giant Trevally as well as the Coral Trout and crays.

I 'll look forward to hearing any replies.

...Since nobody has replied to your questions I'll try to do it wiyh my poor english (sorry about that)....Cyrano has a lighter trigger, an inside barrel of 11mm that accepts 6.5/7 mm shafts and it is more expensive....
Cressi has an internal barrel of 13mm that accept 8 mm as well....
Surely a smaller dia shaft will travel faster but it has less penetration, besides, with a smaller dia shaft more water will leak into the barrel while loading the gun reducing the increase of speed....
with the power reduction on it will be much slower that the old gun you had with a 20mm band... anyway everything will depend on how much atms
you will be able to handle...
ps: there is a kit (mamba) that prevent water to leak while loading the gun,
that will imcrese the shaft speed, you can see it at work in some videos in the net....

The theory behind the 970 is this - lighter/faster shaft propelled at higher velocity because the 11mm piston diameter has less surface area - hence a smaller water column to move along with the shaft. This also reduces loading force for a given psi.

In theory the 970 should have better range, speed and accuracy - but less punch - though the point where speed meets mass is key. I believe Mares says something like 30% - but don't quote me.

Mamba kits seal the barrel. With your SL and a mamba kit you will get more velocity with less Pressure than the 970 (You'll also go to a 7mm shaft if you go mamba on your Cressi) with the mamba kit - but, because the 11mm piston in the 970 loads easier you just ramp the pressure in the 970 to the same loading effort and get the same speed.
Bottom line - without Mamba I'd go with the 970 - with it's a toss up.

The thicker shaft will have lower initial velocity and more drag but more kinetic energy - wher the mass/velocity tradeoff is most evident, in this case, is probably in fairly close. The Mamba guns are incredibly fast and powerful.

Just a question about the mamba kits , will they make the gun powerful enough to hunt mackerel and tuna etc. Also are they available in Australia ? and if so who from?

.....If you handle hi pressure the gun is enough for tuna even without mamba kit....but if you want to feel more confortable while loading it just set the kit on the gun....
you can order it from Maorisub - Entra directly....

Hi 1eternity1, Don't underestimate the power of the dark side - mamba kitted guns totally transform air guns! The power shoots up beyond your expectations, the recoil goes down beyond your expectations.
A a mamba kitted Cressi SL100 will most definitely kill a big pelagic.

I've heard a rumor that a certain company is developing a new pneumatic with an awesome elevated grip - more in line with shaft, a more hydrodynamic barrel and a new trigger mechanism that eliminates one of the main areas of wear.

Of course it's just a rumor.

Around here - in der USA the kit is $150us without a shaft.

Spearo Dave sells them out of England - I've found Maorisub a little difficult to communicate with directly.

I tried contacting spearo dave but he hasnt replied, so all up I would be up for about $250US . will it make the gun that much better???

I'll let the guys who have them speak up. I've researched it quite a bit though and I'd say yes. Maorisub has performance charts on their site. They are in Italian but I think the velocity is about double for the same pressure.

From what I can tell - for your cressi sl100 at about 29.43 Bar you'll get a muzzle velocity of 41 meters per second - and an effective range of 6.06 meters which distance the shaft will reach in .019 seconds.
