Hi. My friend recently passed down his speargun to me (JBL 38 Special). Anyways, when he gave it to me the stringer (I think that's what it's called) was wrapped around the gun somehow so it wasn't hanging at all. I didn't really notice how it was wrapped though. So after a night out spearing, I can't for the life of me figure out how to properly wrap it again. The way I do it, it's just a tiny bit too short to get wrapped around again. I've included some pictures. If you guys can tell me how to do it, it'd help a lot! Thanks a lot!

Jim,
I'm fraid I don't see any photos. You are probably talking about the shooting line. it should wrap around from the slide ring on the shaft in front fo the muzzle to the metal line holder on the right side of the gun handle, back around the muzzle, and loop around the back again. Typically they are of nylon, either mono or braided. At the muzzle end of the line there should be a rubber snubber to keep tension on the line. You will probably have to stretch the snubber a little as you pull the second wrap around the line holder on the handle. If yu have some other setup you'll ahve to provide photos or a description. One word of warning about JBL guns. The tighter the shooting line, the harder it is to pull the trigger. The line should have just enough tension to stay in place. |

Really, the pictures aren't showing up? OK, I'll try adding them as attachments.
I think it's pretty much setup the way you said. But I just can't get it to reach easily. I don't want to really pull on it hard, because I'm worried about snapping the line. Then the speargun is useless |

Jim,
It looks like it's rigged with no snubber. Instead the muzzle is attached with a nylon coated cable that has no stretch. The snubber is a section of surgical tubing with line coiled inside so that it will give some stretch (about 3X) when fighting a fish or missing and having the shaft hit the end of the line, and still be secured by the line running through it. When properly set up it allows a small amount of tension on the shooting line. If there is a dive shop you can get to, it would be a good idea to take it to them and see if they will help you get a snubber for it, and then shorten the shooting line. And, at some point you will need a crimping tool, crimps, and some mono (200 or 250 pound-about 100 kg) to re-string the gun. Ocean oriented sport fishing stores will carry all of these. I restring my Rob Allen guns at least once each year, as the mono gets brittle with time. Howard |

Looks like the line is just about long enough to pass around the line release a second time -- although it looks like you'd need to pull quite hard. Mono should stretch. A muzzle bungee would make it easier though.

I got it! I was pulling on the mono line, instead of the tubing. It's still a bit tough, but I got it in. Got a couple of nice Tai the other day. Thanks for you help!
P.S. - I believe the type of speargun I have is illegal in this country, so I'm a bit hesitant bringing it into a shop |

With all the great Japanese fishing gear (lures, rods, reels, line), I'm surprised we don't see any Japanese spearguns discussed/pictured on the forum. (Can a Shimano speargun be far away?

Actually, yeah, I am in Kagoshima. We generally only do night diving around here. Pretty easy pickings for chinu and kurodai. We grab the occasional hirame sometimes too. Where abouts are you at?
