Re: spring steel

avrage steel heated up to 500-1000 F and coated in oil (not synthetic!!!) or detergent if possible and done 3-10 times with 10-20 min between coats and metal kept aroun 600F is ideal but no open flame after coating (if catches fire could burn off coat before cured) after last coat let cure for a min. of 1 hour at 300-600F and slowly cool no cold water.... i do a lot of this outside (tends to smoke a fair bit) on a small wood stove on top to keep flames off.

Re: spring steel

So thats the way to make steel rust proof?
Interesting stuff Aaron, but how would an average person treat it without industrial tools?

hello just reading this ,,what is yr spring steel a SS one or a carbon spring steel?
as my factory in south africa selling me shafts in carbon spring steel for about 13 usd from factory
the strenght is 2050 Mpa
the coating is toyota..as:

///and so we produce to order.

About our new coating for the spears:
(First stage):
1. Is a zinc/iron alloy plating. (The current coating is zinc only).
2. It withstands 500 hours salt spray at 35 C.
3. This is 250 hrs more then the current zinc coating we use.
4. It is applied to a thickness of 12 micron. (similar to the exist coating).
(second stage):
1. This stage is basically the same as the existing coating and passivates the zinc which gives it a much higher corrosion resistance.
2. It has been proved proved that the olive drab (green if you like) is vastly superior to the black passivate. So there goes black spears. We will have to go back to the existing colour.
3. Interestingly I believe RA is going for a gold finish, but not sure.
FINISHED SEALER (third stage):
1. This is a new clear (transparent) process which is included in the overall new coating package.
2. It is a lacquer which after application is baked in an oven. This reduces wear and chipping and gives a silky smooth finish to the texture of the spear.

All 3 stages mentioned above are part of the Toyota Japan approved coating....///

Stainless spring steel shafts are still existing i just bought an existing stock that is now arrived in tahiti 3 weeks ago..
-------------------------------------------------------------------------but if you can make some 6.5 mm shafts or 7mm i am always interested in testing a sample..then we ll see..
