Was that me? If you read read my comments I think you'll find that I suggested learning how to aim because of This reason: LASERS DON'T WORK!!!! This is why:
  • In less than perfect fiz they don't have the power to be of use.
  • In good vis they scare a lot of fish away if they see the green spot moving near them on the reef.
  • A laser beam travels in a straight line, your spear shaft travels in a curved line. Your gun is then only accurate at one distance.
So to be fair, my very strongly opinionated comments were an attempt to try to help you by not wasting your money trying or by not fucking up your gun by chopping lumps out of it!

Daryl does chime in but on the subject of attaching a torch onto Sheri Daye's gun. Yes his guns are awesome and I'm still very proud to say mine still has a 100% hit record with no laser.

10 minutes of target practice here and there really does go a long way to building your aim and confidence.

intresting idea dude, i can see how your having diffcultys lining the sight up. If u worked on the idea for a while it might become pretty accurate but i personaly dont think id use it, kinda feels like cheating. Oh and ive just got my eye with no misses on a dive acouple of days ago. 1st of its kind for me so im stoking out good luck none the less, must be hard doing it 4 times a year. u need a big aquirm in the bak yard

Re: Green laser on speargun

Thanks, WetKiwi. Sometimes human curiosity makes us do stuff, which is not practical. Like hunting fish instead of going for it to the store, which is faster and cheaper (especially considering price of my Wong!). Or actually going places instead of watching them on TV.
And what somebody might feel as cheating I might consider as efficiency.
I guess every means to make the hunting more efficient (in terms of fish escaped after being shoot) is a good thing. And as long as people don't kill more fish then they need for dinner it is fine IMO.
I'm totally agree with Pastor that practice makes perfect, but I don't have access to any pool where I can practice, hence the solution of using laser. My son found it very helpful on his JBL, I guess I need more power and better mounting gismo for the longer-range Wong.
Murky water observation: actually the more particles are in the water the more convenient it is to aim since you see whole beam, not only dot on the target (as in crystal-clear water).
Price\size observation: DPSS module from z-bolt with 30 mw output (6 time the power I used) is only 129 USD, 55 mm long and 10 mm in diameter (no batteries). Not too bad sizewise and moneywise. The question is how to make it water proof and adjustable for each spear gun.

Aiming observation (a joke): PASTOR are you suggesting to practice intercontinental missiles more often to get a better hit rate instead of using technology?

Thanks everybody for your input and support.

Not such a bad idea on the face of it. If the people that pushed the button used their dicks as a pointing device at that moment all the missiles would end up in outer space and be harmless here on earth

Yep. It is all about personal involvement. But we live in the world, which is far from perfect...
Good hunting to everybody! I will probably take some time-out from the laser project to gather some ideas to simplify things, make the whole device lighter and more convenient to use.
Thanks for your support...

Re: Green laser on speargun

Always a controversial subject but I am always trying to develop new ideas & although lasers are not a new idea, one that works would be very interesting to me.
I am led to believe that a blue laser is the most successful for penetrating bright conditions?
Interesting that red & green (the type & power generally available) just dont work in our locale sea at least not in the day time but even a cheap red pointer shows up very well underwater in the dark.

Re: Green laser on speargun

From the theoretical standpoint we should consider the overall optical system performance, not just isolated element.
In this case system consist of laser+eye. So we need take into account the spectral sensitivity of an eye as well as absorbtion spectrum of the water. You right and green of 532nm (green lasers) is absorbed almost twice faster then blue laser (I think it is around 470nm), but human eye is almost twice more sensitive to green then to blue of those wavelengths.
So both effects are cancelling each other. BUT! We also need to concider the sun light since it is illuminating the target and produce the noise in our case, which makes the target recognition harder. And you got me on the paradoxal thought here. To make the laser dot more visible it might be benefitial to use red laser, not the green one since there is a lot of green illumination deep in the water, but almost no red! I need to do more research on that. So it just might be that in this particular application red might be better solution for optimal system performance, contrary to the initially obvious green laser.
Thanks for the great comment!

Re: Green laser on speargun

Hey Sancarlos,

GREAT thread....I have a laser I bought ages ago...a cheapie...to do the same experiment....but was just going to tape it on, haha. I think a lot of people are interested in your project, but few (i.e. me are willing to invest the time!). Many fear new technology...but who goes boating without a sounder and GPS these days? and in the end nothing will replace experience and bottom time!
Hunt wisely and take only what you need is the key ;-)
