Sliptips have a slide ring that fits over the shaft, an adaptor that screws onto the threaded shaft, and the tip itself, which sits on the adaptor. The adaptor is slightly larger in diameter than the shaft and slide ring, so it prevents the slide ring from coming off of the shaft.
The slide ring has a little hole on the side for cable or Spectra, and a crimp (for cable) or a knot (for Spectra) keeps the end of the cable or Spectra from coming out of the slide ring. When you shoot the fish, the shaft pulls back out, the tip comes off of the adaptor and toggles on the far side of the fish or inside the fish, and the cable or Spectra pulls through the slide ring until it is fully extended, permitting the shaft to come back out so that it is not being used as a lever to enlarge the hole in the fish.

They fall of if they are not restrained. Most people tuck the cable or Spectra under a band after the gun is cocked.
