Re: ear plugs for old spearo

Also they pretty much eliminate the cold water hit

(I am not affiliated with Doc's Pro-plugs nor do I play one on TeeVee)

Re: ear plugs for old spearo

And, seriously, how many $$$ for a set of doc's proplugs?

And, less seriously, do they bargain used spearguns in exchange for plugs? ;-)

Re: ear plugs for old spearo

I think I paid about $10 us - they come in several sizes so it is best if you can try them. They also have vented and unvented - for diving - obviously - you want the vented ones. They have a tiny hole through the center to let water in.
Everyone I know who's tried them really likes them.

What kind of feeling makes it necessary for you?
What do you think is the reason behind equalizing on ascent?
What type of equalization technique are you using when ascending?
How often do you do it?

I can't speak for anyone else but I don't notice any pain on the ascent although it does strike me that the external pressure will decrease as you go up & so the eardrum could bulge out - due to a pressure differential between the inside & outside of the eardrum (the opposite of when you descend).

Re: ear plugs for old spearo

ive surfed/speared in cold water for 20yrs and have a condition (diffuse exotosis of the external auditory meatus) where the outer canal (outside of ear drum) closes up as bony growth endeavors to close to protect the drum from cold/evaporation. very common in UK. ive 90% closure of my right and 80% left. if i get my ears wet they block and i then suffer repeat infections. in the surfing community Blue tack (used to stick paper to a wall temporarily) is used as a plug. its perfect, pinch off, rub it to heat it up and push. dry as a bone. i use blue tack also for spearing (1o-30 mts ) i never get a squeaze, iether ive got perforated drums (ive seen specialists, and none mentioned this) or as my outer canal appeture is so small there is little compressive volume?. spagetti, you spear all year? winter in the med gets chilly. get a nurse (cheaper and more access) to have a look, if you got stenosis it very easy to see. my outer ear canal has not been wet since 2003, not even in shower or bath. you got to do what ever keeps you in the water.
