Swallowing During Statics

Hello, Does anyone else here feel the need to swallow during a static? I do, although not a contraction, just feel more relaxed after.

Just wondering.

Jay

Re: Swallowing During Statics

Usually, especially when packing a lot...Nothing too dangerous, but I try to fight off the reflex as long as I can, as I usually end up swallowing air.

When I pack really full, I cannot hold all the air in my lungs, but I let some of it fill my mouth and cheeks. I'm usually fine until the point where I push this air back into the lungs (around 3 or 4 minutes). After that I get the swallowing reflex. I guess it has something to do with the difference in pressure or something (as long as mouth and lungs are equal I'm ok). Or somehow moving the muscles and parts in the throat to make the "transfer" possible stimulate it. Dunno...

Re: Swallowing During Statics

Interesting.

How about dyn or cw? For me there is no urge to swallow then. Even on a deep dive or negatives. Mabey the urge to swallow is put off by reinhailing the air expanding in the mask?

Seems like there are others that are oposite in the treads above. Thanks naiad

Re: Swallowing During Statics

Something which may be of interest:

I have kept or observed several animals which hold their breath. (Newts, axolotls, African lungfish)

Most of the time they sit around doing nothing (static apnea? ) and they can also absorb some O2 with their skin or gills, but they need to surface regularly for air. When they are about to surface, they swallow a few times, at intervals of a few seconds, then they swim to the surface.

Maybe it is some kind of reflex? They are all inactive animals, so maybe they wait for the urge to breathe to build up before they surface.
