16x50m Dynamic Questions

I read a 2002 post from Eric Fattah as follows explaining what is a 16 x 50m:

"16x50m = 16 consecutive 50m dynamics as fast as possible
The fastest I've heard is around 13'00.
How did they score your points for the 16x50m?
Eric Fattah
BC, Canada"

So I tried this at my local 25 meter pool with these results:
Took me 40 secs to swim 50 meters or 2 lenghts in one breath.
Very hard to go again with only 20 seconds recovery and wanted to breath very hard deep and fast. After about 2 like this at 60 seconds total I got very winded and slowed to doing 40 sec dynamic of 50 meter and 50 seconds recovery so 90 seconds total and still had to breathe pretty hard and deep and fast to keep going.

I was wondering how long good swimmers take to do two 25 meter lengths (for 1 - 50m) and how long they recover inbetween?
Also what is their breathing patterns, do they breath as hard and deep and fast as they can or do they do hook breathes or deep breaths then slower relaxation breaths or something else?
If I did do 16 intervals at 90 seconds per interval so 40 seconds swim and 50 seconds recovery is it possible I could BO from cumulative buildup of something? (50 meters is not that long for me as I can do +100 meters PB without much fuss)

I am interested in this as I would like something that I can do that I can compare myself to accomplished freedivers and measure my progression and not be at great risk of BO like it seems I would if I tried to do personal best max dynamic to measure progress as a regular training item.

Thanks and Cheers Wes

Re: 16x50m Dynamic Questions

The 16x50 is not really much of test of freediving abillity, it's more finning technique, fitness and CO2 tolerance. The people I train with in Finswimming would kick my butt at this yet I can do about double their distance in a single max dynamic. If you try the 16x50 without a monofin you would be at a major disadvantage. Bi fins are much slower.

A good speed for a monofin dynamic with classic finswimming style is around the 28-34 seconds over 50m.

I would say with a 16x50 there is still some risk of BO if you had very short intervals, specially with bi-fins. I think doing repeat 25's it's nearly impossible to get a hypoxic episode even if only taking a single breath at each end. But the CO2 is a killer !

Cheers,
Wal

Re: 16x50m Dynamic Questions

This is what I did after doing 20m with short surface intervals... not a BO, but I think it had something to do with being hypoxic.

(When that happened 20m was a lot for me, now it would be no problem.)

Re: 16x50m Dynamic Questions

Hi Wes

I read on a french forum that the 16x50m world record was set on March 25th by Laurent Cavanna.
Here is the link:
http://www.plongeur.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22398

It took him 11min 43sec.
Every 45 seconds he started the 50m.
He swam the 50m in 30-32 seconds to swim the 50m and rested for 13-15 seconds.

Re: 16x50m Dynamic Questions

Is there a 16 x 50 for dynamic no fins?

If so, what's the record?

Peace,
Glen

Re: 16x50m Dynamic Questions

Wal - Thanks for the facts on 16 x 50m
Naiad - Thanks for the funny story

Maybe I will try 25m with Bi-fins and monitor my Saturated O2 during the interval, that would seem interesting and pretty safe.

Cheers Wes

Thumbs up Re: 16x50m Dynamic Questions

16 x 50m,
This is, as fastest you can, swim 16 times 50m with fins,
11'43", Laurent Cavanna, France, 060326, in Amiens
12'12", Brice Lequette, France, 051119 in Berlin
12'17", Mikael Asp, Sweden, 051119 in Berlin
12'29", Peter Pedersen, Denmark, 031115 in Berlin

Glen

In the website indicated by Billextreme, there is a 20 x 50m (no fins).
http://www.apneamania.com/code/world...pr&specID=amap

To cite what is written:
"20 x 50m
This is, as fastest you can, swim 20 times 50m without fins,
19'43", Bill Strömberg from Sweden, 970808 in Malmö, Sweden"

Yikes,
That's a 50m DNF every 59 secs for a kilometer. Hats off to Bill. I'm poke along at 60 sec/50m but I only do one in a row.

Peace,
Glen
