Static/Dynamic and spasmophilia

Hi there!

here's a question that is bothering me for some time... I suffer from minor spasmophilia (it's a lack of magnesium that becomes chronical) and I have the impression that it really disturbs my static and dynamic performances. The symptoms are minor in my case: some twitching in my facial muscles, sometimes cramps when I walk or cycle, irritability etc. But when freediving, I have the feeling the symptoms become overwhelming (hard to control tension in my muscles while doing static and bad cramps when doing dynamic despite a good condition).
Usually, to ease the symptoms, taking Magnesium supplements helps but I wonder if some other people in the freediving community have the same problem! I'm quite good at relaxing most of the time, but when I have a spasmophilia "crisis", then it's soooo hard. Sometimes I really have the feeling that this problem "holds me back" in a way, and it's frustrating! Any experiences or feedback would be appreciated: I didn't find anything relating spasmophilia and freediving so far...
Cheers from France
Micky

Re: Static/Dynamic and spasmophilia

Dear micky, i have repeated low levels of magnesuim and acording to lab reference range should have had cardiac problems but did not. I WONDER if your perhaps not also low in pottasium or sodium or even calcium tetany concerns me because of the serious cardiac ramifications, primarly fatal disrhyimia which could lead to heart attack.Perhaps in france you have access to a magnesium supplement that has a longer half life,in the states we have a product called slow mag perhaps this might help also a product called dhea may be of some help. I have treated myself on and off just with cheap magnesium would not have known i was so low but my wife is a lab person so i have had many free tests in the past only health problem i have had is a tremor in my hands this must not be a problem for you
good luck hope this helps yours truly rob

Re: Static/Dynamic and spasmophilia

Hi cigarlung and thanks for your answer!
seems that not too many freedivers are suffering from the same thing, lucky ones!!
Yes, I guess I should take it more seriously and do some blood tests too... The only thing that really worked for me was Magnesium injections every two days for 2 weeks... not very practical... I haven't found a Mg supplement that suited my needs in France unfortunately... What does DHEA have to do with the Mg problem? I thought it was only to look younger!
Cheers,
Micky

Re: Static/Dynamic and spasmophilia

DEAR Micky, perhaps this disease is autoimmune only a guess, from a nurse if so many good things have been written about positive effects with illness lupus ,fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome all which are autoimmune. I am always looking for a cheap cure rather than expensive cure in the states DHEA is cheap i dont know if it is cheap in france does, not seem to have many side effects except causing manic episodes in people who are probally already bipolar, may also have positive effect on moodstate however we both know freediving produces a positive mood state. As for staying young I use to love those french gallouse and gintain cigs,I think smokeing ,sun exposure, stress and poor eating age us more than anything. Good luck in your adventures and if you end up sometime in Chicago let me know my wife and family would like to meet you. yours truly, rob bowen
