Question Chest Burn during DYN?!

Alrighty now. I've been trying to "make the turn" at 75m during DYN, and can't seem to get my body to do it. I come up fine, no blueness to my lips, and just a little leg burn. (in the meantime, I get to enviously spot my dear husband on his effortless 125m DYN...no, really...I LOVE it!).

I know that my issue is simply a "mind over matter" thing, and I just need to get over it to progress to 100m. That being said, today I experienced chest burn JUST as I was supposed to make my turn at the end of 75m. I felt okay otherwise, but it felt like needles all over the front of my chest. Not in the lungs, not in my arms/shoulders...but isolated to my pectoral muscles. WTF? Anyone ever experience this, or have any advice on how to ignore it? It was pretty freakin' freaky, and it's never happened before today.
Thanks all!

Re: Chest Burn during DYN?!

I don't remember who taught me but the answer for was. Take tiny steps. Next time, if all has gone the same, anticipate the feeling and tell yourself to turn. That's all, just turn and stop. A few of those and you'll be able to kick once or twice after the turn. Small steps. Another lap is very intimidating. A turn isn't.

Re: Chest Burn during DYN?!

Burning in pectoral muscles? I guess it is associated with contractions. Surprisingly most divers handle or tolerate contractions on a completely different way when doing dynamics than in statics. Some of them are able pushing through the contractions in dynamics and give up as soon as they feel one in statics, and there is a group of divers who feels exactly opposite - they are able to withstand 3 minutes of contractions in statics, but give up just after they start when doing dynamics.

Just think about the dynamics as if you were doing statics - relax. But Bill is right, if there is some surprising or new feeling or pain, it is better to stop. You first need to know what is it, and if it is nothing pathological, you have to accept it psychologically.

Re: Chest Burn during DYN?!

Thanks, guys. I don't think it's related to contractions...but I could be wrong. I realize tapping the wall is the hump I have to get over...mind over matter, baby!
Oh, and Trux...I think the contractions during DYN are easier to handle than the ones in STA. I can roll with the ones I get in STA, but they are difficult to ignore. In DYN, I feel them loud and clear after 50m, but I feel like since I am continuously moving...some of the energy is released through that movement.
I'll keep y'all posted. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't some danger sign related to chest burn.

Well, then perhaps the burn comes from friction - you swim too close to the pool bottom Try putting some lube on your chest

Re: Chest Burn during DYN?!

You guys are too much!
However, Trux, I have been needing to remove about 1 lb of weight from my neck weight...I am TOO close to the bottom. Instead of taking apart my neck weight, now I have been given the option of lubing up the OUTSIDE of my swimsuit. Excellent!

If we thought the lifeguards at our municipal pool looked at us strangely before...wait until tomorrow!

Billie, the conversations always seem to degrade when you or your husband are involved.... I' starting to see the common denominator....

Re: Chest Burn during DYN?!

Okay seriously about my idea on blood shift, I used to get embarrassed really easy and would get really red in the face from blushing. I would feel like needles in my scalp and my face would get really red. I have noticed in static as well as dynamic that around 75-80% of my max, the blood will leave my legs and then arms. Is it possible that the concentration of blood in your thorax is causing the pins and needles feeling? You guys all know of my below average IQ on this sort of stuff, but does it seem plausible?

Re: Chest Burn during DYN?!

This would depend on your definition of 'degrade' I find Billieball's threads not only informative, but inspiring. Are the Dynamics with or without fins?

I was actually referring to conversations during a FIT course and then on another message list. But thanks for inflating her ego, now her husband has to deal with a power trip!

Tony, I'm leaving your question alone as I have NO idea.

Re: Chest Burn during DYN?!

I am completely avoiding saying anything about inflating or lube.

Pins and needles could be a few different things - one of them being tension in the upper back - if the dynamic is with arms over the head this is even more likely and might be rectified by working on relaxation as the breathhold wears on.

Re: Chest Burn during DYN?!

DYN with fins. We'll get back in the pool tomorrow (Thursday), and I'll try to figure out what's happening.

Oh yeah, and I'll take that extra weight out of my neck weight belt tonight. If it were only that easy to take weight off of other things. *sigh*

Seriously, the best place to be when doing DYN is in the middle of the water column, right?

It is not quite so sure. I heard both opinions - there are some freedivers who prefer swimming pretty close to the bottom (and continue following the bottom all the time even if it drops down to 4m). Swimming close to the bottom actually helps the propulsion - the bottom delimits the space under the fin, so in the moment you kick down, water below it is faster accelerated backwards than if there were free space. On the other hand, there is more turbulences and more drag.

On yet another hand (hm, I am not sure I have enough of them), according to a recent study of mechanics of fluids, water poses extremely low friction at very tiny distances between surfaces (I believe I posted the article somehwere on DB a few months ago too). I do not remember exactly, but I believe the optimal distance were some micrometers large.

However, with your story of chest burn and the Hooters past, this may be a pretty dangerous distance, so you may think twice before squeezing you that close agains any counterparts (pool bottoms including), because once you cross the critical distance, the lubrication effect abruptly changes into adhesion (suction), and you may not be able to move away anymore!
