Given the number of us whose budgets preclude the purchase of a dive boat, I think there ought to be a forum specifically for those of us who simply walk down to the water to go hunting. Any agreement?

We've got too many different spearfishing forums as it is. Many people who own boats also dive from the beach sometimes. Should they post in different forums depending on how they got in the water that day?
The kelp bed where I got a 62 pound fish this summer is about a mile from the beach and its in the Pacific ocean. One day recently I had just shot a 38 pound fish when a friend, who had previously been diving from my boat at the spot, came paddling up on his paddle board and proceeded to shoot a 38 pound fish of his own. I invited him over to my boat and weighed the fish and took photos. So now I had to decide whether to post the story and photos in Spearo Board, US/Canada, California and West Coast, Fish and photos, or maybe Blue Water (it was pretty clear that day), Reef (there was one down there) or some other forum that I'm not thinking of, but someone else might have. Now do we want to add a Beach Diving forum to the choices? And if so, should there be a beach diving sub-forum in each of the geographical forums? And should I put my story and photos in the Califormia and West Coast forum but he should put his version in the Beach Diving forum? Maybe I'm just being territorial, but its already hard enough to get California divers to post in our California and West Coast forum. I'd hate to give them another place to post.

I hope that my vigorous opposition to Sarge's suggestion didn't cut off discussion. I expressed my opinion, but surely there must be those who disagree with me. If so, please say so.
I promise not to call you names.

Shoot, Bill, you may have spoken for the majority and done it so eloquently that no one felt anything more needed to be said. I just got a question from a member so I thought I'd see how everyone else felt. How'd the season go? I'm headed in to start the process of drilling out the sinuses in October. With any luck, they'll be done before Lobster season closes.

Drilling out the sinuses? That doesn't sound like fun

Trying to dive with stuffed sinuses certainly isn't so this looks to be the lesser of two evils.
Besides, it may help my snoring so I won't get kicked so hard at night. ![]()

I was going to say:
I think I'm with Bill on this. I tend to split my posts based on location & equipment. So normal trip reports go to Dorset, hols. to Devon/Cornwall/etc.. Equipment related posts now tend to go to the closest related thread I can find. I guess somebody could sit down and have a stab at a consistent & coherent taxonomy (PapaSmurf & co. have probably already done this at least thrice). There is a lot of common ground between shore & boat spearing (& which does kayak fishing fit with?) - and specialist topics, like floats for shore divers, tend to get tackled on specific threads - I guess those could be moved to a Shore forum. It would be useful to know what the original suggestor is looking for. Maybe they could be pointed at appropriate existing threads (e.g. Miles' Spearfishing for Dummies/Rigging threads, SASpearo's technique thread, the nearest region thread for them), or there might be a need for one or more new threads to address/discuss specific issues. What threads would you have under a shore fishing forum? Shore fishing techniques, strategies and tactics, shore fishing equipment, shore fishing problems/dangers, shore fishing species. I guess it could work but several of the above might be better tackled in region-specific threads or, perhaps, at a higher level that includes boat spearing. But - I just noticed that the forum structure has been changed recently to include: Bluewater, Reef, Boat, Freshwater, Oil Rig - with that structure, "Shore" does seem conspicuous by its absence. Although Reef might include both shore & boat fishing. Alteratively, perhaps the above should just be considered special extensions of basic shore fishing, that have enough distinct threads to warrant a separate category? I normally just use the search facility or Google. IOW Dunno, don't care

deviated septum and undersized sinus drainage. the fact that I'm allergic to half the known world doesn't help either.
One of the questions that the original requestor brought was 'reef' diving. I suspect that the new category may have answered his needs tought 'shore' would still be a good addition, IMO. We Californians could discuss assassinating halibut and fruitlessly chasing corvina.

That sounds like a useful subforum. I hardly ever boat dive. Can't afford it

Wait till you start paying European prices (twice as much?).
Allergies used to be quite a problem around Seattle. Most of the British women got ecsema or asthma after a year or two & a Chinese friend reckoned many of the Chinese did within 4 years of arrival. Possibly a combination of pollen (lots of trees, esp. conifers & maples) & pollution (lots of traffic)?

Who'd ever have thought that a bunch of sober, Lutheran Icelanders would fall for the 'derivative' game? I'll bet there are some financiers up that we running around in sunglasses with their collars turned up hoping to get out of the country.
