How about this- Is there a way to read more than the last 5 reps left? There was a time not too long ago where I got alot of points in a couple of days- And I didn't get to read them or who had left them. Is this Possible?

The only other point is that the rep you give is in proportion to your own rep. Because foxfish's rep is over 400 then when he gives you rep your own rep will go up by 4. If you give him rep his rep will be credited by less than 1/2 as your rep is only 40. As rep only goes up in whole units less than 1 unit is stored until you have enough to go up at least one more. Something like that anyway.
There was a thread about this not long ago (and before that and before that etc) where it was suggested that you should be able to see your last 10 reps. I think it was me suggested it. Someone was gonna look into it? Dave

In days of old the green squares used to very slowly increase in number as peoples rep slowly increased so it was a nice little visual indicator of whatever rep is. Then everybody had rep values of less than 10, now all it takes is a couple of hits from those who have very high values for the squares to hit maximum value.

Yes, there is inflation of the rep point value. The green reputation bar lost any informative value it ever had. Today, practically any noob who never even put his head under water can get the full bar within few days - he does not need to post anything valuable for the community. It is enough that he posts a few times in a Happy Birthday thread, or copies and pastes a joke from the older pages of the jokes thread and he gets more points than the best assets of the community and real experts on freediving.
Look for example at the reputation of Eric Fattah, Dave Mullins, Sebastian Murat, Jome, Cebaztian, and many others (sorry I cannot name all, there are many of them) who taught us incredible secrets about freediving that you can't find anywhere in books. Despite their regular posts, their reputation is far bellow the average DB poster. And that's just because they do not bother posting in birthday, acronym, jokes, and other off-topic threads, but rather focus on real freediving only. There might be some ways how to improve the reputation system algorithmically, but am afraid that it won't mirror the real reputation of individual members or their contribution to the community any soon. Yes Pastor and Trux what you say is true.
I've always been proud of my high rep power and I'm happy that so many people have been nice to me by this means of giving me rep. Thanks to all of you, again, and I mean it with an open heart. Thanks for the rep. But it hasn't much to do with diving, and I'm afraid it could be no good for the benefit of our community. I think that many people with a lower "rep" level feel uncomfortable for this: it's a sort of "rating" persons that's creating a gap, an unfair distinction between more popular and less popular members, which is not right, no good, it's unfair, and at the end of the day it can be seen as unfriendly. Why don't we consider changing this rep thing?

Yeah, I don't really care how many rep POINTS I have- It doesn't matter to me - but I like to read what they say with the Rep Points. That's why I was wondering if it was possible to read them other than the last 5. I mean I guess the points are cool to a point, but it's not important - TO ME.

Well that is three people who I no longer have to send rep too
From my prospective it was the rep system that kept me interested in db during my early days, although it might not impress every one, the rep system does make db slightly different from the many other popular dive forums?

As long as we’re all being honest here then this is my £ worth.
I will freely admit than I’m not the deepest diver or the longest breath holder, fish spearer or technical guy on the forum by any stretch of the imagination but does that mean that I haven’t contributed to the well being of the members that have read my posts??? I thing not! For me Deeper Blue has been and will continue to be more than just a port-hole to advice on the sport that I have chosen, it’s a FULL community where I have made many friends and have undoubtedly pissed a few people off with some of my dribble, but if it were ALL serious and just talking shop then I personally think it wouldn’t be the place that I’ve come to rely on. As for the Rep thing, well if you see fit to wish a fellow water enthusiast a Happy Birthday or if you can lift somebody day with a smile then why shouldn’t they respond with a little rep after all its only little green squares with a number below. Do we think that we’re reading a little more into it than there needs to be? Just my thoughts people. Oh and have a nice day. (if the smilies where working there would be a big green grin right here)!!! |
