Re: green bay wreck / cyprus

Looks like a very old wreck to me. did i see an old cannon sticking out of the sand?

Can you tell us more about the wreck? Vessel type, age, location and depth?

Re: green bay wreck / cyprus

About that wreck is supposed to sunk in 1571 when the first turkish invansion in Cyprus was making its last step (first turkish invansion in cyprus started in 1570) the leader of the invansion was the turkish admiral Lala Mustafa who after loosing around 80000 soldiers for taking Famagusta he promised to the leader of famagusta Marcantonios Vragadinos that he will allow all the army and citizens to leave from famagusta with all their stuff if they want to . But soon after inviting the leader of Famagusta for the discussion of surrending the city he cutted the heads of all the officers and treated marcantonios in a really terrible way starting by cutting his ears (The last words of marcandonios vragadinos was : "never be found a man again to Trust the Turkish"). About the ship now , one of the ships of Lala mustafa as it is said , after been shotted by a cannon , left to the south for repairments but didnt make it and sunk 7 miles south near the coast, but it was also said about a woman that among others which were collected to be sent to Konstantinupole (is -tin pole- as it was said in greek words and this is where the turkish found the name for the city they took from byzantine empire , is tin pole -istanbul) as a present fired up the cannon powder store room and the ship was exploded .

that ship and others thousand of ships wreck around Cyprus were fount since starting 70s by the American Institute in cooperation with Cyprus Repuplic after the excavetion of kyrenia wreck wich ofcourse is now under turkish occupation (one of the oldest wrecks ever found in the world imagine only the 430 ships lost b.c. while Demitrios poliorkitis was fighting against ptolemeos the left hand of Alexander the Great who took Cyprus under control after Alexanter death

Cyprus has the ownership of all wrecks in the territory of the republic as it is stationed by the republic laws and international treaties and conventions
