Dear Freedivers,

its now 4 months before the start of the 2011 AIDA Depth World Championships to be held in Kalamata Greece.

The official website has been up for several months now at Freediving Club (follow the WCh2011 link) and interest has been high.

At this time I would like to point out a few very important deadlines for AIDA Nationals and Athletes themselves (Nationals have also been informed directly but just in case someone missed it :) )

1. Monday 9th May 2011 - All AIDA Nationals need to email us at info@freediving-club.gr and state their intent to attend the 2011 AIDA Depth WCh. All AIDA Nationals that do not state their intent by this deadline will be considered as not wishing to participate at the event.
On this statement of intent to participate we would request you include an approximate number of Athletes the AIDA National expects to send to the WCh2011. The statement should have the format

AIDA National:
We intend to participate at the 2011 AIDA Depth World Championships with ____ (number) athletes.
The team will be escorted by ______ (number) coaches / assistants/

THIS STEP IS MANDATORY IN ORDER TO ADEQUATELY PREPARE ACCOMMODATION FOR ALL ATHLETES/TEAMS, PREPARE ADEQUATE SAFETY PERSONNEL AND TRANSFER BOATS. IF YOU DO NOT PROVIDE US WITH THIS INFORMATION NOW WE WILL BE UNABLE TO KNOW THE SIZE OF THE EVENT.
COUNTRIES TRYING TO REGISTER THAT HAVE NOT PROVIDED THIS INFO MIGHT FACE RESTRICTIONS IN THE NUMBER OF ATHLETES/COACHES ETC THEY ARE ALLOWED TO BRING.

2. Training at the 4th Med World Cup September 1-15 - Registration Deadline 31 May
This year the very successful 4th Med World Cup is being organized right before the World Championships as a training and preparation event. The Med World Cup is of course open to all who wish to train for 15 days in the beautiful clear waters of the Messinian Bay (sled diving and all normal activities will of course take place)
The registration form for this event can also be found attached.

3. 2011 Depth World Championships Registration Deadline - 31st June 2011
This form and the team deposit have to be received by the 30st June 2011. As this is only 2 months from the start of the event we cannot accept registrations after this date as our hotel discount is only valid for bookings made to that date. Any AIDA National wishing to register after this date is liable to face significantly higher accommodation prices.

Preliminary interest in the 2011 AIDA Depth World Championships has been significant and we expect that with your help this will be one of the biggest and best AIDA Depth Competitions in the 19 years since AIDA was founded. Due to the very high number of athletes expected to compete in Kalamata your help in respecting the above deadlines will be crucial to allow us to best prepare for this great event.

See you all in Kalamata

Hi Stavros,
Is it too late to register for the Med Cup? I have only just found out that I can go to WC so now I am interested in the training beforehand.
Cheers, Mike

Hi there,
Stavros, when could we expect to see the list of the athletes participating in Champs?
Website has some nice pics and music, but not so much of info...
Bless
Swider

The list for Lignano ( pool champs) will be out the first week of September. The deadline for registration has been extended to Aug 31. :)

It makes big surprise to me why there are so little participants (only one) from Italy with such great story in Freediving...

I'm shooting in the dark but I have a feeling that this is because it's an AIDA competition...

The three highest ranked divers in cw for men is missing from the in-list (Nitsch, Stepanek and Mullins). Is it a problem for the sport that the World Championship does not attract the top divers?

I think it is the consequence of allowing standalone record attempts. There is then little motivation for them to participate on WCh's where they risk failing to meet their goals easier than at an individual record attempt.

Is it a good idea only to allow record attempts in some competitions, which AIDA grants world record status (like in pool comps)?

In other words, not to allow record attempts outside of selected comps with world record status?

Well, frankly told, it would probably not change a lot. At least not in current situation with current rules. It is easy to bypass such restrictions by merging the record attempt with a small local competition. It would be necessary to change also the rules for assigning the WR status to competitions - defining the minimal number of competitors, minimal number of foreign competitors, maximal number of attempts per discipline, etc.

Training so far is going well: lots of PB's, a couple of athletes below 110, very strong women, very few BO's and sambas. Conditions are perfect, no waves till 12:30 and then mild ones, water is 28 degrees at the surface, mild thermocline around 15 and you get bitch-slapped below 55. Set up with the big platform works very smoothly.

Fred has taken some beautiful pictures: kalamata AIDA world championships 2011

I've taken some portraits: Daan Verhoeven: pretty freedivers

But the internet connection is a bit iffy (iffy Wifi = Wiffy?), so hard to keep things updated.

Daan! Do you have any idea what the temperature is below 55?

I'm packing 4 different suits, so one of them should be good in any case.

See you soon!
