And here a small portion of the spill from Spill Baby Spill's Photos - Wall Photos | Facebook:

On a more positive note - the Japanese probe flying to Venus just sent back a snapshot of our planet, and the Earth still looks pretty great from far far away, so it looks like we can still afford couple of spills before it gets entirely brown or black:

this is a truely sad situation and nothing can make it go away my heart goes out to you all i,m half a world away and it makes me shudder theres just nothing i can say that makes it stop hurting

My only question is with a reported 17 countries offering to help, many with large scale specialist equipment that can make a big, if not all the difference to the outcome....why are they being held back ???

I will be devils advocate here.

I think Ann was right to a point but getting million dollar bonuses for running a company to the ground is not capitalism its cronyism.
Capitialism means your rewarded for performance and at your own risk and if its a private company doing all legally I have no problem with it. Once the state has to help it because its become to big to fail then its no longer capitalism, once you get a bonus even if you fk up royal its no longer capitalism. Once you take insane risks with othere peoples money because you know the state will bail you out its not capitalism.

i know .. omega all this harping on about the oil leak needs plugging

i think its had enough bloody media coverage now already

can you believe they are STILL covering this thing on the news!?
all these whiners should leave it alone already!
i gotta say, that is some quote! do you still stand behind those words?
even from oil employees with so much to lose ,(how IS that bp stock coming OMEGA3? ) sorry, not funny really. its sad. sad for you even sadder for me.. and the best is yet to come! the whole damn summer its gonna spew unchecked. this is ridiculous. is anyone still on the oil company's side on this? are they REALLY gonna pay for all of it to be removed? and pay everyone ,(as suggested previously on this thread) i figured it out! the oil companies have so much money, they actually have a mole in db, for propaganda.,(a few of them really) who else would say such things? i'll say it again: they should seize bp's assets now before they hide them. its plainly obvious that they are gonna be giving up many billions of dollars for this, if not more. so why not take a bunch and put it in escrot now. bp executives should be fired the company sold off. it wont be enough to heal all this ,but its a start.. this will be the worst disaster ever by august. and thats the best case scenario at this point. but not to worry oil mongers: you can go to poor nations and trade them weapons and money for the rights to drill of their coast. i hear brazil is looking to acquire some deep drilling rigs from the same company that designed deepwater horizon. i bet they are on sale now!!!! seriosly though: shouldnt there be some way we can stop them from drilling unsafe depths ANYWHERE? if it leaks enough oil into the sea, its the same sea we all share!!! it WILL AFFECT us!! all of us! everyone on earth is damaged, so why dont we take some measures to stop them from doing this at all ever, anywhere on earth! i know its just not realistic, the world is easily corrupted by money. but that is a shame, because this kind of stuff will lead to the downfall of us all

Hi Feargus - I think the hinge-point is in identifying the point at which capitalism and democracy diverge from one another's best interest - and choosing which to prioritize.

Here in the States - thus far - the banks that were bailed out are paying back the government. Of course that begs the question of how it got the way it got - which I believe goes to the bit about according corporations the same rights as individuals. It is not rocket science to see this is at best a tad idealistic - corporations are headed by people and provide tremendous potential amplification of greed - as we've seen - and most assuredly no corporation is a democracy - so when the weight of what's done is dictated by corporate interests there would seem to be a philosophical dillemma.

It's worth noting that, for example, here in the states one may still find hydrogenated fats in children's cookies - whereas I believe these are illegal in your neck of the woods because of the rock-solid science connecting them to heart disease. - But to ban such a thing is not in the interest of our corporate individuals and would taint our wonderfully benign and self-regulating capitalist culture..

I don't doubt Ms. Rand was right about something...

Thanks for asking and the concern jt. No worries my end, dumped all the BP shares on day one(nice little earner) and am now making a killing on industrial cleaning companies at the mo.

How was the HAZMAT course, did you get the matching apron?

Top tip ...good time to invest in fairy dust companies. I hear this is the future to run your boat and car on. It makes great plastics and medicins too!

Nobody is denying this is a sad event. Its how you deal with it that counts! Try not to get overwhelmed!

Remember that the States are oil dependant (as many countries)and has an ageing power infrastructure that needs replaceing in the near future. It is an ongoing problem with their populatoin growth and increased energy consumption/requirements which is largely why they have been unable to sign up to many of the consumption/pollution etc treaties/policies. We are a ways off nuclear fusion and fission is still king both with their pros and cons. I see the UK has agreed to 10 more fission plants.

Guys my 2 cents lay off jtkwest. the piss taking is uncalled for imho its a serious situation that I am glad is not on my doorstep and would feel really pissed if it was.

Thats fine fcallagy. As has been said before and you agree, it is not a good situation and that makes you normal to feel annoyed should this happen on your doorstep. However you should also then be able to appreciate that panicking and mud slinging is of no value either and you are welcome to side with whoever you wish.

I don`t recall ever having had shares in BP or stating that I did!

This may be the beach bar and it would appear some have been drinking!

ill be totally honest feargus . jts quote has highlighted a joke i made not an opinion and i do sympathise with the guy .
my only problem was the off the cuff remark regarding taking bp s assets my use of military force and the bruce willis/clint eastwood/rambo attitude(" who can stop us") .i did try and correct him but all of a sudden i worked for bp and my prissy arse drank tea and i should of been gratefull that the us stormed europe and defeated the 3rd reich for me .

furthermore on the subject of the oil spill ,in jt,s opinion, britain has never had any oil spills nor does it have a marine eco system and jt wished that the oil was washing up on our shores and he simply could turn his laptop off and go spearing or watever..

insulting people who have a diffirent take on here does not go down too well and for my part i regret retaliating and as some one advised me" never to argue with an idiot they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience" which is true.

bp s employees hopefully will be held accountable when the criminal and civil enquirys get under way

ill not post on this thread again but please jt think a bit before you respond ,no matter how pissed you are ,

But you do and so do I.
Lads I know where your coming from on the whole storm the world remark from Jwest but he was pissed and think it was sorta retracted. I know everyone on this forum is pissed off at the spill and hope the people responsible get their just deserts and the environment manages to recover.

I will make givings way:

Ayn Rand provided the philosophical underpinning for USA policies toward business for quite some time now. She and Milton Freidman.
"Who is John Galt?"! The financing/power/wealth situation in the world is certainly in a bad way currently - broken and hugely out of balance I would say. It's a stretch to blame Ayn Rand though, for current this environmental accident/disaster. Once the investigation has been completed, it will be interesting to see if the findings support your theory or not - industrial decay and failure were her pet subjects.

According to the Times, it was Bill Clinton's removal of safeguards that led to the banking crisis - and I can't see him being a follower of Ayn Rand (except for the fornication perhaps). W might be. Not Obama (but he's not been in power long). In Britain, it was Chancellor Gordon Brown who removed safeguards - they were apparently at the beck and call of the city bankers, rather than overseeing them. The British govt. was Labour for the past 13 years (thankfully that just changed) - their influence (inc. B'liar's) is Marx rather than Freidman or Rand. Their personal greed might well remind one of Rand, their lack of competence & enterprise would not.

RE. hydrogenated fats, its 2010 and we still have hydrogenated fats / trans-fats in the UK & EU - that's a needless crime against humanity. NY is leading the field on that one. We will no doubt follow eventually, with the politico's on all sides dragging their feet/wallets.

Jt, the bottom line is that everyone feels the pain for this tragedy.

As a diver myself, my solidarity and thoughts go to all the people living on that coast.

All the rest, in this discussion, is a mix of political debate and mutual misunderstanding.

If we could only seat and talk about with a beer or two, I'm sure you'd feel our human solidarity and friendship above all, despite the political divergences, which on the other end are, themselves, a typically human feature we must accept and live with.

look jt chill out no body is interested in who is insulting who buddy .
i certainly didnt take offence it amused me .
whilst i do admit baiting you a little in the thread and regret it its all besides the point .
fact is you guys have got a problem over there and i for one hope it gets sorted
all else is irrelevant
