Question Maldives - info needed

Hi,

I'm off to the Maldives on a liveaboard in May. I'm just wondering what the divings like - I've been told theres a lot of drift diving, and some fierce currents. I'm relatively inexperienced (36 dives)and I've also been told that the mjority of dives are delayed SMB dives. Whats the story? I've never used SMB/DSMB before so do you think its worthwhile getting some training before I go??

Any other details of the Maldives and experince of liveaboards out there also appreciated!

Thanks
M

Hi,

I just did 5 days/14 dives in Feb. This basically doubled my dive experience to date. As you say most dives are drift dives but not too strong. I only has one dive where coping with the current was at all uncomfortable. In terms of the experience generally I very much enjoyed myself although much more for aquatic life rather than coral which was all still bleached. I has heard about signs of recovery but did not see much sign. On the other hand the visibility was great and we saw white tips on almost every dive along with Mantas, mobulas, turtles and literally dozens of napoleons. I'm sure you will enjoy it and at least in my limited experience the diving should not be too taxing.

One final point, in terms of difficult stuff, it is illegal to go deeper than 30m in the Maldives.

Cheers

Simon
