The wife did think the mullet was ok, we only had it plain fried, maybe it would be better in some spicy fish cakes.
Yes, we get the GG's here as well. never had one myself thought. can you tell the difference between them and greys in the water? I know they are smaller but they are pretty similar otherwise so think they will be hard to identify in the water. |

Haven't been in much over the past few weeks with one thing or another but went in for a few hours on saturday.
It was very quiet at first, no bass to be seen and even very few sand eels, crabs and wrasse. only saw a single mullet. So I headed further out to a different area where I could see some jap weed on the surface. Was just getting off my dive hunter, putting the mask on and reloading the gun when a good sized bass swam right up to me. it was about 30 degrees off where the gun was pointing but I slowly turned and got the shot off as it turned. It dives into the weed, hit it, lovely. Dump the gun and swim over and the thing has disappeared. It ripped itself off, thats the first time it has happened to me and damn is it frustrating! especially when you know its probably going to go and die somewhere anyway.Saw a few more after that but unfortunately nothing came home with me. Still it wouldn't be the same if you got them everytime would it! and I now know a nice area to head to the next time. |

Bad luck for you & the fish Wanny but it does happen, although not many spearos talk about it! I had a ring weld put around one of my mamba spears so I can fit a 32mm wooden plug about 20mm back from the spear tip. This is very effective at stoning bass but reduces the range to 2mts.

Hi Guys
I’m coming over on the last week of October and will be staying in St. Helier – could you please advise on a few dive spots (I will have my car), preferably belly scrapping stuff through weed for bass...... many thanks in anticipation

Hi Flyflicker, not being rude but haven't visited in a while.
I usually dive the south east coast and there is plenty of ground there for the kind of diving you are looking for. La Rocque is my favourite but green island, la hocq and la mare are also all good. Depending on the amount of time you have getting in a good few hours before low tide will allow you time to get out to the back reefs and dive them at low water before riding the currents back in. if you are shorter on time then la mare may be a good option as you can be a bit more flexible getting in and out with the tides and its only 5 mins back to st helier. feel free to PM me if you want any more detail. |

Dived Bouley Bay again yesterday (no gun, just my camera) and came across this jelly fish. It was about 2 foot long and had unusual fish sheltering in it's tentacles..
Also saw a bass and a micro cuttle fish of 2 inches long! Then a pint of the golden stuff and fresh scallops from the Black Dog

Hi Mark. Good to hear from you, not been visiting here much recently as too !$£%ing windy to think about diving. Still looks a bit blowy for the weekend but hopefully can get in.
Only been in once so far this year - a few weeks back, 2m viz and no fish so not the greatest of dives. The water looked like it was clearing up last week though. |
