Re: hunting in lake powll

I haven't been there but from what I know about the place I would say that it is likely very cold and that carp are the only legal species. Lake Powell has suffered badly from silting since it was first filled. At the present time many of the places that people used to take their houseboats into are now solid ground. The remaining lake is deep river channel so I would think that nice warm shallows are few and far between. However, if you like shooting carp, there ought to be some monsters there.

Re: hunting in lake powll

It's true what you said about dry ground we have been having a drout here for the past 6 years and the lake has dropped a hundred and fifty feet. But, due to abuve average snow fall (200 something percent) it has been rising rapidly. The watter tempiture is pretty nice about 70-75 degres surface temp. The rules are if you have a vallid state fishing permit you can shoot anny two type of game fish and an unlimited ammount of carp,(verry big) and striper (lake record had a 6lb bass in it's stomach)

Re: hunting in lake powll

Really! What a refreshing approach to fisheries management. Spearing stripers while based on a houseboat in Lake Powell? Wow! Wait until Papa Smurf and the crew get back. This looks like an ideal place for the First Annual DeeperBlue Fish Rodeo and General Carouse. Pity I'm all booked up for late July '06. Perhaps we could get something together for the end of June?

Re: hunting in lake powll

Any one ever speared a striper boil? I have chased giant striper boils all over that lake with fly tackle. I hope to come up in the middle of a giant school of 5lbs plus stripers with my pole spear this summer. I have been told the real big dogs hang 30 to 40 ft below the boils. trip plans anyone?

Re: hunting in lake powll

I will most likely show up during a weekend with my wife and friend (90% chance right now). I am still waiting on half of our equipment, the shipping has been all messed up.

I will ask around and see if I know anyone with a houseboat at Lake Powell, it would be alot of fun to go down there for a big diving party. I will have a Manny Puig Polespear that anyone can try out while we are there as well.

Re: hunting in lake powll

I will be in Hawaii July 11-17. The water is pretty warm from mid June to end of August as far as I know (mid-high 70's at surface). Also I will talk to a friend of mine and see how busy Powell is between the July 4 holiday and July 24 holiday, I think it would be fairly packed. If we went into a cove and setup a bunch of floats and had huge dive flags on the boats, maybe people would stay away. Most boaters/fishers in Utah have no idea what a dive flag is though.

Typical of freshwater boaters. Usually attracts skiiers at 40 mph

I'd be interested in coming down there sometime in the future if you guys manage to bag a few.
Peace,
Erik Y.

Re: hunting in lake powll

And I'll be in Africa July 17-Aug 1. I think we'd better plan for a bash in '07. Too many of us have already booked our vacations for this year. Dang!

Re: hunting in lake powll

Well you can hunt carp and striped bass year round, so if anyone feels the urge to go there it is always open and I think we can get a few people from Utah there on short notice too.

Re: hunting in lake powll

I'm located in AZ and I'd love to do some spearing at Powell...this summer even for short weekend trips.

I suck at diving/spearing but I might be getting a boat soon!
