Spearfishing south wales

Hey has anyone been spearfishing around the South Wales coastline, if so what's it like?

I know most people seem to head for the south coast of England, but South Wales would be better for me since I'm much more familiar with the beaches, especially Gower. Is the viz just too bad around there?

I tried going off Portland Bill with a mate the other weekend, but it was so rough it made it pretty difficult... I ended up losing a fair bit of gear!!

Hi,

Went spearing in Pembrokeshire at the start of the summer , vis was good but there was a lack of fish . The bigger fish I am told appear later than they do down here in Weymouth .

I'm off to wales again at the end of the month . West angle beach in Pembrokeshire is a good spot , enter the water from the sandy beach , follow the coast around to your left and you will be at the entrance to Milford Haven. ( Don't be put off by the super tankers sailing past you! )

I have not been there but a spot I might try is Giltar Point Nr. Tenby , It's quite a hike but this months sea angler sang its praises and it looks good from a spearing point of view also.

Ive not fished in South Wales at all but I walked the Pembroke coastal path a few years ago, there where some likely looking Bass spots around the Manobier (spelt right?) area. Plenty of other good looking spots too.
I often spy on the Sea angling forums to see whats what at the time, this is the one for North Wales http://www.nwsa.ukf.net/ you may be able to get some links off it

Hi Alex, and hi to everyone else at Deeper Blue - I am a new member and this is my first post (although I have been a voyuer for a while!).

I live in Swansea and have been fishing on the Gower for a few seasons now. Basically Gower is a good spot for fish, especially bass, but is let down by the quality of the visibility. It needs to be completely flat to be any good, particularly on spring tides when the slightest ripple seems to be enough to send clouds of sediment into the water.

If you are planning a trip to Gower try and use the various surf reports to see what the swell is doing - try the links on a1surf.com or for the Gower you can ring PJ's surf report 090 1603 1603 - premium rate but much cheaper than a wasted drive.

With regard to spots on the Gower the whole of the south coast is good. Take your pick from any of the bays and fish the reefs/points at either side. All the points have strong currents on the outgoing tide though.

Langland and Caswell Bays have good access and parking and good fishing on the reefs at either side of both bays. Oxwich bay can have clear water when nowhere else does because of the protection of the point - fish out along the point on the right and keep an eye out for the wreck where you might find some trigger fish. Stay well clear of Oxwich point on the out going tide however - the rip is a runnig river.

I end up having to head out to Pembrokeshire quite often and it is a lot more consistent for vis than Gower but still not great. We haven't explored the are as much as we shoud have as we are quite conservative after nearly two hours in the car! The tips from Alison and Ceri are definately good though
