I'm not aware of any sort of firearms legislation governing the ownership and use of bows, crossbows and catapults (as they aren't strictly speaking firearms) and i would assume rubber powered spearguns fall into this category. As previously pointed out air powered guns are exempt from the normal air weapons rules as they are specifically designed for use under water. They probably are all affected by the offensive weapons act though, so don't go wandering about in Tescos or the town centre with them unless you're wearing a wetsuit, fins and mask and can convince a copper you're on your way to use them for their intended purpose!. One thing i am sure of is when the police come to inspect out cabinets and munitions lockers they don't bat an eye lid at my spearguns and cross bows hanging up in the magazine.

I agree with Andy and Rob that presently, spearing has such a low profile in Pembrokeshire that the issue probably isn't worth pursuing, for the time being...
Let's keep our heads up and feed any news back to DB.

Hi Pembroke
PM me with your details. I come over to Pembroke twice a week to play octopush at the school pool on Mondays and Wednesdays 9-10. You're welcome to come along. A couple of us are spearo's Andy |

Haven't looked at the forum for a while and here's a chat about my local haunts. Sounds like the original National Park publication which has got you twitchy is aimed at our bubbling cousins and I'd agree they've got enough kit without carrying spearguns aswell. I've never had anything but interest from people when carrying my gun to the water be they scubas, anglers, fishermen, rangers or grockles. I don't necessarily avoid populated beaches, they can provide easy access to swim to some good grounds. Relax, talk to people you see, don't go sneaking around as if you've got a guilty concience and people won't be suspicious.
The best way to access range west at castlemartin from the shore (If you don't fancy the swim from fresh which is probably quicker and easier) is to phone the range, go to a meeting and get a pass. It means the hassle of signing in and out at the guard room in merrion before and after, but you can walk over the dunes from gupton gate and change on a deserted beach. I only used my pass twice last year but it was still worth it. |
