Cheers dave. Yeah, there are plenty close to the rocks - from the Yacht Club jetty around to the old sewage outlet. I didn't see Bass any bigger than the ones I shot - but there were plenty that size. They seemed to circle about 3-4 meters away from the pipe about 3/4 of the way out, and also seemed to cruise up and down the Yacht Club jetty on the beach side.

Yeah, some friends from Llanengan have had some beautiful Bass off the old lifeboat slip (rod fishing). Well, if you give it a go, let us know how you got on. I'd be really interested to hear what its like.

Cheers,

Ed

I know its no 10lb monster, but it was the perfect BBQ size and I got a couple of good meals out of it.
My second trip yealded a similar size fish, but I didn't have a camera for that one.
My third trip was pretty sucessful also. I managed to bag the two grey mullet in the picture below.

After a couple of years of trying, they are the first fish I have caught with a speargun....

.....I was over the moon!!

Aha! so you found the spot then!
Just back from north cornwall at at pothcothen. seemed perfect with loads of stringweed but only a few juvenile bass about and a lobster in a pot. Tempting but now its probably just cost some rich tripper £50 in padstow.

Well done

Re: Spearing north wales

Cheated a bit as was using my monofin!!! 32 m with plastic fins is wicked!! My old garas used to just fold up deeper than 25m!! and give you that unnerving feeling that i've turned, i'm kicking but am not going anywhere!!!!

Cheers Steve,

If it wasn't for your advise, I'd probably have had another frustrating holiday fishing in completely the wrong places! I would never have guessed bass would feed so close to that busy jetty!
Thanks again for sharing the info. Its given me the extra motivation to look for new spots and bigger fish. I’ve just purchased a Diveyak and can’t wait to explore some offshore reefs off the northern coastline.
Thanks again,

Ed

Re: Spearing north wales

I bet its a lot easier in the warm clear waters of the Red Sea. I was using my gara's not the milleniums out there, the part I found hardest was finding enough air to equalise, kind of like I had no air to do it with most of the time but yes I know what you mean about kicking and getting nowhere On that 1 dive it all just fell into place, got to the bottom and felt like another 10 metres would have been easy, I just swam along the bottom for a few seconds and I think for the first time had a good look at the size of that coral wall in front of me. Very very cool but I still dont fancy the dorry.

Got some new batteries for my torch today so all set for tomorrow

Re: Spearing north wales

I'm sure no one else is in the least bit interested but Dave and I went out for a night dive last night. Viz close to the beach was about 1.5m and further out opened up to about 5m so pretty good. I didnt see anything worth a damn though, half a dozen small pollack, Dave saw a Bass but the bugger broke off

Best thing about the whole daive was when Dave told me about the bio illuminecence in the water, I think we both switched off our torches and spent the next 10 minutes waving our arms and legs around and watching the light show (Oh to be young again so I wouldnt have looked such a jerk thank god it was dark )

There was a bit of a chop up and after a bit I started to feel really crook so that was that for me. Got back to the car and found that my car keys had come off the carabiner on my bouy and like good mates do, Dave shot off and left me in the dark miles from home

Re: Spearing north wales

You missed one hell of a dive this morning, Got in the water at 10 and had 4 5lb Bass in half an hour!!!!! it was insane, every dive had schools of big bass just comming in!!! it was real pick the fish you want hunting.

As soon as the tide started runing the fish just stopped!! Found a few more bass in the shallows and got 2 nice sized lobbys as well!! so ended up with 7 Bass gnd a couple of Lobsters, wow what a morning!!!!

The schools were huge with 30-40 fish all over 3lb in weight it was wicked, on a few of the dives I just lay in the weed and watched the show in front of me!!!
