Re: Spearing north wales

10lb cod!!! that would do us in the depth of december!!! Have caught cod up to 4-5lb out from trearddur in the winter on the idiot stick, but viz may be a problem, you can get some real good coallies as well around the cymyran and rhoscolyn, they may be worth a go as well??? will have to dig out the 7mm suit!!!

Re: Spearing north wales

I have been thinking about these flexible, one use heat packs that you can buy in fishing tackle shops. I recon one placed under your suit in the small of the back would work a treat?

Re: Spearing north wales

Hey foxfish, cheers was a really good day on saturday!

Am sure eric fattah talked about using the heat packs, I use the reusable ones (with the metal disk) for fishing in the winter (great on the fingers after trying to defrost sandeel!!!)
I freedive the quarrys in north wales all winter and find a 6.5mm top and longjohn 5mm fine for an hr or so and thats in 5 deg c water!!!! almost have to crack the ice!! its usually the feet that go first and take an age to to defrost with the car heater on after the dive!

Hopefully have a few more weeks left if this swell lets up at all. Otherwise its like diving in not so hot chocolate!

me thinks a trip to Guernsey is in order for 2007? what do you think Pastor!!!!!
Just think what we would be like in good viz!!!!! no stoping us then !!!

Re: Spearing north wales

Guys,
I too keep an eagle eye on the thread...always interested in whats happening up North, especially as my bro lives in Bangor and i like the occasional trip up there. My last trip only secured one 6lb er from Rhos.....
I was however gutted that i didn't get to get in at Aberffraw...it looked very fishy as did whitebeach and lots of the north Lleyn......just remind me to stay away from Abersoch during summer holidays.....what mayhem!

Dave...where did you manage to get in in West Wales? vis is terrible at the mo down there, i had a whole week off two weeks ago and only had 2m max vis the whole time! rubbish....

Re: Spearing north wales

My family all live around Cardigan and Newquay, the best spots I have found are cwmtudu and aberporth, I usualy dive from my kayak around ynys lochtyn, great fishing but real strong tides!!!

You are not wrong about the viz!! its always a pile of pants!! most I have had this year is a hazy 3-4m but a few years ago I had over 5m but there were very few fish around . I think the bad viz gives them a bit of confidance and also if they whant to see you they have to come into spearing range!!!

You are right about the north llyn coast, there are some wicked spots......................... if you can find them

Get in touch next year when you are up north and it would be a pleasure to try and put you on to some fish.

Dave

Re: Spearing north wales

Ahh.... your fishing much further north than i venture, st dogs is my territorial limit northerly. Im fishing shallow water and not diving so any near shore muck usually puts me off and once you get to Aberaeron thats all there is.

This year has had terrible vis...i'm blaming a hot june and july and a massive rise in plankton levels, saying that in early june i probably managed 8 maybe 9meters+ got that lovely Blue room sensation....but very few fish...

Yeah, bet there are some good places on the Lleyn...i didnt find them though....its a strange place, access to the coast on the north is difficult to say the least... and the numbers of people where you can get the a beach is just scary! If i lived there id have to start a campain to ban the jet skis though..........make it a much more pleasant place!

Re: Spearing north wales

Hi guys,
I always check this thread first when logging onto DB. (its my favourite!).
I don't often have anything to contribute to the tread as I'm mainly sat at my desk in Sheffield, daydreaming about fishing on the Lleyn!
I've got half term at work coming up (Oct 20th-28th), and was planning on spending it at my house in Mynytho. Just wondering if its worth bringing my gun with me? Are Bass and Mullet around at that time of year?
If the weathers decent, I'm going to get my DiveYak on the go - I want to check out Careg y Chwislen just off Porth Dinllaen - looks interesting - has anyone ever dived round there?
Pastor and Tecdave - cheers for sharing your spearing experiences even though you didn't think people were watching! I really enjoy reading your accounts. And Dave - keep up the awsome photos of the fish you catch - blows my mind every time!
Cheers,
Ed

Re: Spearing north wales

Have never dived that side of porth dinllaen, usually more around porth ysgaden, but looks a good area, just be carefull of the very strong tides (best around slack water either high or low)

If you get a good settled period prior, then The viz should be ok, as for bass and mullet I am not really sure!!! the bigger pollack will still be around as well as the chance of a coallie or two.

Give it a go!!! if its calm I will be there as well!!!!!

Re: Spearing north wales

Nice one Dave! I thought tides might be an issue diving there.
Do you get Bass off Porth Ysgaden? Its one of my favourite snorkelling/freediving spots but I've only ever seen millions of Pollack and Wrasse there. Saying that, I usually keep quite close to the shore line - maybe I should venture out a little further....

Re: Spearing north wales

I quite like diving in the current, like an hour before and after, just drift there and drift back again. When there isnt to much chop its a lovely way to dive, just hanging silently in the water without finning, you really get the fishes curiosity up
