Re: Spearing north wales

Nice one Pastor, thanks for that info where not looking for about another month or so, so it should be perfect.

What sort of depth are the boat trips you normally do up there?

Re: Spearing north wales

They are not organised boat trips as such, it's a boat that belongs to my spearing buddy but you are welcome to join us. We use the boat to cover more area in a day and the depth varies between 0.5 and 10 meters, maybe 15 meters on very rare occasions. Shore diving around here is between 0 - 7 meters, deeper if you want it but there isn't much point, there are plenty of fish in the shallows as a rule. All in all tis pretty cool

Smile Re: Spearing north wales

Hi to all!
Just back from three days on Shell Island. I have fished it with rod and line in the past, but thought I'd take my spearing stuff instead.
Monday at low tide: poor-ish viz and only a school of small bass seen. Tuesday on a rising tide: good viz (3-4m) and a tally of one flattie, a 3lb mullet and two bass in the 1-2lb range. Saw a much bigger one (maybe seven lb) but it was miles too wary for a decent shot.
Wednesday again on a rising tide: saw fewer fish and ended up with one bass about a pound and a half. Plenty of schoolies around: saw two decent shoals of at least 50 fish, but all 6 - 12 inches long and a bit too small to shoot. All fish taken about 100 meters off shore, in 6-12 feet of water.
Give Shell Island a go: gently shelving beach with very little current (but avoid the marina inlet). Tons of food for the fish about: crabs, sandeels and other little critters. Watch out for the boats. I saw a few come close but they all saw my marker and kept away.

Re: Spearing north wales

Plankton is getting a bit thick at the moment, vis down to 8 - 10 ft at best. Had a couple of Bass this last week but there aren't many of them about. Plenty of Mullet swimming about, some nice ones too.

Last Wednesday I was out, I dived to the bottom about 20 ft and hid in the kelp. Viz was about 8 ft and jut out of sight I saw something move, like a faint shadow, a fish I thought! It didn't come close enough for me to see but this thing was pretty big. I didn't shoot because I couldn't see clearly enough, there has been a seal hanging around for a few days, so I came back up for a gasp!

So about 10 minutes later I decided to start making my way back to shore as I'm getting a bit cold. So there I am in about 3 ft of water on my way back and all of a sudden there is this Mullet in front of me swimming to the right. This was a humongous fish! Certainly as big as the width of the screen of of our 42" telly. It must have been over 15 lbs easy, I had my gun on it quickly and tracked it, they usually bolt but this one kept swimming past without a care in the world. Guess it knew I wasn't going to shoot it, some things are better off left where they are

Had it been a Bass It would have been dead but I see a couple of Bass that size every year, I have never seen a Mullet anywhere near that size in my life. Besides I already had 3 Mullet on my stringer and the memory is in my head for life

Re: Spearing north wales

Water like mud today after the winds and rain over the last couple of days. Peed off completely, wanted to try the new suit out but no point even trying. Reckon we might see a difference in the fishing after this disturbance

Re: Spearing north wales

Went out on the boat this morning for a couple of hours. Viz was about 10ft on the last of the incoming tide. Saw a good few schooling Bass today at depths between 10 and 40ft but nothing caught. Things are looking up Going early tomorrow to catch the low tide and fish it up

Re: Spearing north wales

Went in for a dip just before high water yesterday - like swimming i pea soup , vis was 1m at best. Saw nothing . Ill give it a go again next weekend ,maybe one evening this week - Think you're right about the fishing ,there is nothing like disturbance and unsettled weather to get fish moving.

Re: Spearing north wales

Where did you go? We were on the offshore reefs out of Rhosneigr but even in the shallows of the boat lane on the beach it looked to be about 10ft there too

Re: Spearing north wales

Just come back from there myself, gave it up as a bad job. Close in the viz was about 30cm and about 400m out it opened up to a whopping 1 meter

Re: Spearing north wales

Still looking muddy, did you go for it then? The temptation of a new suit must be to much to bear
