West Wales Gower

I am off to a friends in West Wales over the bank holiday, they have a boat, we are keen to go spear fishing, I am after some advice / help on suitable locations in the general area, I understand a lot of the Gower may be a marine reserve, any help much appreciated, the area’s my friends have mentioned as easily accessible are North Gower, West Gower (rhossili) or the eastern side of Camarthen Bay. Thanks in advance Jason

Re: West Wales Gower

Gower can offer good sprearing for Bass and has alot of good ground for lobster and crab. It does have one major problem though. The visibility tends to be average at best. A prolonged calm spell and neap tides can give 3/4m vis but this is not the norm. Gower is also heaving with small boats so always use a dive float. Conditions tend to be much more favourable in West Wales.

Re: West Wales Gower

Gower is not a marine reserve. The only reserve in Wales is an area around Skomer island including Martins haven and the west side of Gateholm Island. The best spearing is on the south coast before low tide. There are slip ways at Mumbles, Oxwich and Port Eynon but you will need a 4wd for the last two. The whole of the south coast can be accessed by foot. The area has very large tides so always check times.
