Re: Gower 2007

Hi,
I would defo take your knife in, never dive without one. As far as weight goes, how much do you have on the belt? how thick is your suit and do you have any extra bouyancy like a few of us on this forum have!!!!! I find it much easyer to load the gun in the water than on dry land but again it is just practice. with the weights, just take some off and try it as you can always just go back to the car and pick another one up.
Enjoy the weekend i will be in a few tmes as well!

Dave

Good luck
cant find the video only this pic, i dont load my gun like this i place the loading butt on the buckle of my belt then grab the rubbers and pull them back until the wishbone locks in place.
Cheers Spearheads

Only tried to load it once, I know about the dangers but I'm a bloke with a 11 year old kid trapped inside!! Thanks forth ediagram tho, that will help.

As for the weights my belt has 18lb on it, I'm 13.5stone and will be using my top of the range surf wetty 5/3mm (pretty buoyant) so it should be fine, but will take it easy first time out.

Can't wait!! Cheers for the advice.

Re: Gower 2007

You may find that you need a little less weight than that but it won't be to bad! I use 21lb with a 6.5mm top and 5mm bottoms, but some people like to be nailed to the bottom so have more on their belt.

enjoy.

Cheers tecdave

Will def take the knife too as the idea of getting caught in a net has without doubt answered that question!!!

Re: Gower 2007

I only use 7kgs on the belt then 400 grams on the ankles.
But i like hunting deep so less wight is needed.

Re: Gower 2007

I Cary 2 stringers with me a steel one on my flout and a mono stinger on my belt, my belt stringer is only used if in a shoal of fish and i dont want to be fussing around putting fish on my flout, its mono so it can be cut in a emergency.

If my belt stringer becomes to heavy i put fish onto the flout stringer, its steel so there is no chance of it breaking and losing all my fish.

Just put the loop on the belt then tuck the rest in were its comfortable.

Re: Gower 2007

Hi all,
Just to keep you posted with the gower, went in on Sat to a spot called Mewslade - there was a 2ft swell with a nice offshore wind so I pretty much knew that the area around the point where I wanted to go would be unfishable and also the vis would be bad.
Got in and it was - 1 metre vis so stayed in the bay area and used it as a training session to practice my aspetto and get my weighting sorted, needless to say so life seen!

Tecdave as soon as it is worthwhile down here it terms of vis I will let you know am very eager to learn. Mr X thanks for advice I think I will work at the spearo first and then go from there! The Cobra place has relocated not far from me in a place called Baglan near Port Talbot. Planning to go for a dive tomorrow will let you know.
Cheers
Matt

Re: Gower 2007

Dived a spot called Pennard yesterday vis was bad- 1m. Swam around to the point by Pobbles bay and the vis cleared to about 2m lots of life on sea bed, just not the fishy variety. Returning today.

It was quite strange the way in which the vis would go from about half a metre to 2m's? Has anyone experienced vis changing in different areas? I think the vis cleared because we were over a reef as opposed to sand??

Re: Gower 2007

Hi,

Also a spearo in Swansea....welcome! Glad to see you're braving the Gower this time of year. I usually go spearing during the summer with a mate also living local. Conditions have to be really good for us to dive the Gower, when they are there is usually bass around. Often find we have to head out west for better vis.Probably a bit early for bass at the moment, but you never know. Good luck.

Justin

Re: Gower 2007

Mewslade is an interesting choice of location. Closer to town, I wonder ifBrandy Cove, Limeslade & Mumbles might be worth a look?
