No more dull spears

I finally broke down and bought a bench grinder.

Jon, remember the spear on your old midhandle? Here it is a minute or two later.

...and I'm not even good at this yet.

Re: No more dull spears

i use whopps grinder for that he thought i was dumb for sharping my spear but it works really well but make sure you get it stright or your spear will not be true i found that out when i took too much off one side of the spear and it started to shoot low

Re: No more dull spears

I didn't think you were dumb for sharpening your spear- I'm sure it was for something else. I sharpened my spears with it. So, not sure what you are talking about.

Re: No more dull spears

I considered one of those, okamotoa. But, the ones I looked at couldn't achieve a "pencil point" tip. They all made a wide tip - even the adjustable units. Could you post a photo of one of your spear tips?

I just use an orbital sander with a 120 grit pad in a vise...Be careful you guys... You can ruin the temper of the steel if you get it too hot!

Re: No more dull spears

Thanks for the bit re: overheating the spear.... but.... Does that really warrant a "" ? Unless we throw it through your window, you don't have much cause to scold us. It's MY spear .

Re: No more dull spears

This post came at a crazy ideal time. Fargus64 just completely blunted my spear. Not his fault though, we were diving in a river and vis on the bottom 12 FOW was only about ten feet. So Im going to hand file it to a nice sharp point again I think.

Re: No more dull spears

thats cool, it would have come in handy yesterday when me, fleshy, and fargus64 went out and got into some suckers but the first shot we took went right through and hit a rock, for the rest of the day the spear was just bouncing off their bodies.

Re: No more dull spears

Too true too true. Double banded the gun and blew right through the 20" sucker, into the sand and hit a rock.
At least the fish didn't have much to say about it
