Howdy,

I'm really happy with my scuba Elios, fits like second skin and I can comfortably dive in situations where everyone else is in their dry suit. So, I'm getting another 5mm for freediving and figured I may as well save on postage, take advantage of the exchange and get a one piece for the pool at the same time.

I'm tossing up whether to get a 1.5mm or 2mm high collar one piece (nylon/smoothskin) for dynamics. It won't really be an issue for warmth - whilst I can't do static or dynamics for too long in cold pools, I am sure that either of these will be enough to keep me warm. It's more whether the extra buoyancy would be a help or a hindrance. The orca frees are 2mm and they now seem to be the suit of choice, however, I don't know how much extra weight I'll need to counter that. I also wonder if the 2mm will be just a bit more durable.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Cheers from down under

Personally, I prefer thinner - in a 1mm suit you perfectly sense the water, while almost not feeling the suit at all. At a good suit you don't feel any limitations (for example at extended arms), as it can be at some thicker suits. The thermal insulation of a 1mm suit is more than sufficient for me (though that's individual), and also better for diving response. Of course, the durability is worse at a 1mm suit. Another factor is buoyancy - the extra weight you need to compensate it, may be helpful at DNF, but not so much at DYN (rather oppositely).

I prefer the speed suit ,skin ,type thing. Jaked, Nero, Lazer, etc. It really makes a difference with less resistance. It also is better for dnf so you are not restricted by a bulky suit.If the water is warm enough ( tropical) you can wear one for cnf, as well. Otherwise, I wear a 1mil Orca or the OrcaFree.

Thanks guys, but argh I just ordered the 2mil yesterday. I am sure I could change it to 1.5 - elios don't do a 1mm smoothskin anyway. I really need custom made as my body shape is a bit demented, wouldn't dream of ordering anything online if I hadn't had the chance to try it on. Also, this would be for pool only, one day I might move to a tropical paradise but at least for a while I'll need 5mm if I want to go for 'real' diving ;)

Carla, I'm waiting for a FSII to come up at the right price and size on evilbay; in Australia the speedos are the only brand commonly used so thanks for suggesting the others! Any other recommendations? I figured that it would only be worth getting the full bodysuit.

I would get too cold training dyn/dnf with just a speed suit (though if I start competing I guess I'll get one eventually), and I want to focus on DNF anyway as I can't get a monofin for a while. (And I am ridiculously unco at fly kick). I was leaning to the 2mm because I thought that the extra weight I would add would be better for performance than the slight extra mobility + DR that the 1.5mm would give me. All the top DNF swimmers seem to be using wetsuits, though what thickness I don't know.

So I guess now my question is should I stick to the 2mm for DNF or send another message to elios?

It's a great time NOW ( not being manufactured anymore) to pick up a FINA illegal suit-- they are bargain prices and are allowed for us in AIDA. The BlueSeventy Nero full skin was $400 and now only $100. You can order one from Kerian Hibbs . Monofins.co.nz . They are hard to get on, as all skins ,but great for getting more distance in dyn/dnf.

ps. here is a famous "skin wearer"

Wow - thanks! Oh my I am spending way too much money on this... I'm just calling it an 'investment' ;)

Obviously you think I should stick to this, but as I have ordered and paid for the other suit already, do you know what thicknesses most of the comp divers are using for DNF?

but you do not want to wear a skin to train in-- they do not last very long. Get one and save it for competition. I train in a regular speedo swim suit for dyn/dnf. Wear a surf suit to stay warm for static training. Put on the speed suit for comps to give me that psych edge- lol! For cwt and cnf training I wear the OrcaFree and the thinner 1 mil for comp. I don't like a hood for cnf. so I wear the suit the cnf king designed.

I think it depends on what the pool temperature is. I didn't go to Aarhus but they said the pool was rather cold. At Okinawa the pool was outdoors and HOT! Being too warm sucks the energy out of you as does being too cold. I don't think you can get one suit for all conditions and yes it becomes quite expensive. I have various suits and several monos. I need all the help I can get!
