The 2010 Fourth Annual Oregon Freedive/Yoga Palooza is happening Aug 17th thru Aug 22nd!
Last year we had a great Palooza and the longer schedule worked out well.
We will keep with that same schedule this year. We also had a some great
Yoga sessions so are adding that focus this year too.
Tuesday Aug 17th - Arrival / Dive day
Wed Aug 18th - Dive Day
Thursday Aug 19th - Dive Day
Friday Aug 20th - Dive Day / Arrival Weekenders
Sat Aug 21st - Dive Day
Sunday Aug 22nd - Dive Day / Depart
Location: Lost Lake, Oregon (Google "Lost Lake Oregon")
Elevation: 3,143 feet (958 meters) Note 10% standard altitude pressure
drop at this altitude so only 90% of the air at sea level.
Max Depth: 175 feet (53 meters)
(We had a max dive depth of 30m last year and will do same
unless we have counterballast/extra safety set up)
Surface Water Temp in August 70 F (21 C)
Thermocline at 30' and bottom temperature ?? 50F ?? (?? 10C ??)
Lake Size: Lake is about 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile so very small.
Boats: NO MOTOR BOATS OF ANY KIND ALLOWED ON LAKE
(WHICH ROCKS FOR FREEDIVING)
Visibility: Good (better in the spring time), typically 40' to 60' in
August.
Getting There:
Drive 2 hours from Portland Oregon or PDX
Drive 4 hours from Seattle Washington
Drive 5 1/2 hours from Vancouver BC
Drive 12 hours from San Francisco
Fly and rent a car, they are cheap from Portland airport PDX.
Lodging:
We stake out lakeside campsites at the beginning of the week for
the estimated total people. We need to pay for the sites for the
whole week to get good ones by the lake so the cost is the same
for 5 days or only 2 days. These are the nicest camp sites I have
ever been at with big wooden tables, shady huge trees and nice flat
tent sites. Several folks bring their big group propane cook stoves to share.
Recommended Wetsuits:
For shallow diving above thermocline: 3mm with or without hood
For Deep diving below thermocline: 3mm with hood and neopreme socks
is perfect or more if that's all you have.
It is really relatively warm.
Spear Fishing:
No real spear fishing at this lake as mainly Oregon game fish
which are off limits.
Typical daily schedule:
- get up and have light snack/juice drink breakfast.
- Dive or Yoga (some like to dive first thing some not)
- Have real breakfast eggs, toast, pancakes etc.
-take nap
-Have lunch
-go for short hike or read a book
- yoga
- Have dinner
- Talk about diving
Alternate Activites
- Old growth forest hike leaves from campground
- 5 mile round trip hike to Lost Lake butte climbs to 5,500' with
amazing view of Mt hood from top
- 3 mile round the lake hike with amazing views of Mt Hood
- 6 mile round trip hike that meets up with cascade crest trail that
runs from Canada to Mexico.
- rent canoes or boats from camp store
- Drive 20 minutes to Dee Flat and pick blueberries at amazing blueberry
farm (berries as big as some cherries)
- Drive 45 minutes to town for awesome Thai take out or any other fun
Hood River
town things (and there are alot).
Registration:
We aren't running a contest or organizing a group event or anything
like that, just letting you know a bunch of freedivers will
be at Lost Lake on these dates. We assume no liability for anything
at all (even this message). So there is no registration, no fees, no organizers.
Safety:
Bring your own safety or be prepared to buddy up with others
attending, and please always be prepared to help out others. We want
this to be a very very very safe weekend.
Experience:
We like to have a handful of experienced divers on hand all the time
to help everyone out and last year had several PFI trained divers
which rocked. At the same time Lost Lake is an ideal place to
learn to freedive with a gently sloping bottom, clear water and
no Ya-hoos in speed boats to worry about. So bring your
newbie friends if you want. We will dive with whoever shows
up.
Please reply if you think you will make it.
