Hello all! :)

Speared my first fish the other day. Very happy with myself. Used a pole spear for it, still waiting to use the gun.

Anyway, I'm wondering if a 3 piece spearfishing suit exists, Or even a 2 piece as I haven't found any need for the hood yet though I will at some point, but a lot of the time I don't need to go deep so I'm looking for a suit that has top and bottom (waist or over shoulder) and a hood or just no hood. I have a hood anyway. Basically like the Cressi Tracina or Tecnica without the hood.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks all!

Yeah I probably will, this is becoming too much hassle and I'm starting to see more point in the hood for winter. :)

Half my surfing mates I tell about the difference it makes it goes in one ear and out the other...but it is like chalk and cheese. You want your focus on your breathing and seacraft(tactics), not the water down your back or the shivers. Dont forget the hair conditioner lube :)

Ah I see. At the moment I have no problem. I'm new and the furthest I've gone down is 6m and I'm fine. However in the winter, it won't be the same. But I've decided just to keep my suit and get another one. What is hair conditioner lube and where do I get that? I have never seen or heard of it.
And while we are here, when you were new to this, what wa te furthest you could go within a month of starting an your breath hold time?

When you buy your open cell neoprene spearo suit you will need a lubrication mixture to get into it. A good one is hair conditioner and water in a spray bottle to lube the inside of the suit or you will rip it.
On the question of starting when I was young I never really thought about depth and breath times as it was all just 'snorkeling'. I luckily was put on track by a family friend when I was about 12 on the offshore reefs of the Florida Keys and he told me how to equalise and relax and can always remember the excitement hitting 10m with him. Back in SA I was mostly just grabbing crayfish and google/deeperblue did not exist and so spearing fish came along after seeing some of the older local legends with good gamefish coming ashore. Nothing wrong with 6m and say a minute, just keep getting in without exerting yourself and your experience will build. Try leaving the gun behind and just dive checking all the holes you can find, get under the kelp, spot lobsters/crab and the skill grow steadily. Learn your local spots on different conditions.

Yeah I forgot to buy that with my current diving suit but its very easy to get into fortunately. Ah I see well I'll just keep on trying in a safe manner until I get better. Funny enough I have that book and I'm doing my AIDA* with Ian in two weeks time haha. Im hoping that will set me off in the right direction. I seem to panic when I try to go past 6m and start to feel pressure from the depth. When I think logically, I'm not sure why I panic. That's my main boundary at the moment.
Oh and another question since you've been so helpful, I was wondering how much smoking affects freediving? I know that sounds like a stupid question but I have a lot of factors against me. I'm 19, smoked since 14 heavy and light, recently quit, haven't done much exercise in the past years. I'm confident I can get better at this but I want to know if the smoking will make it more challenging or just impossible?

I have never smoked but I assume more challenging rather than impossible. There's plenty of large and thin, smoking, drinking, successful spearos out there.
