Re: 4Sale Laptop!

I thought it might be a good idea to leave this up for a while, I think it might be a good idea to illustrate the sort of thing that gets posted here at least 3 times a week usually in pairs offering free ipods or cheap holidays etc. The format of these posts is always identical with a link to somewhere nasty :( so if you're suspicious, don't click the link, just click the red triangle warning sign at the top of the post, this is the "Report a bad post" utility, but remember to fill in a reason otherwise it wont send; this will alert one of the Deeper Blue team to its presence and they will delete it straight away :)
Along the same lines, we run a program on our computers called "Adaware! by Lavasoft, its freeware and downloadable, it will search for and remove most spyware crap from your puter :)

Apparently Adaware will/can only remove some spyware some may slip through I'm told. To avoid this I have been advised to run Spybot concurrently with Adaware to maximise your protesction against the bad guys :(

A brief Essay On Spyware - from a network administrator's POV.
This stuff can cause your pc to grind to a halt - not to mention grabbing credit card numbers and all that. I , just for 'fun', have fixed two PCs that were completely inundated with spyware. I did it for an educational process - in both cases It took approximatley 4 days to clear them. They were INCREDIBLY slow and a process like opening windows explorer could take 3-5 hours. Once the machines were sort of cleaned up I plugged them into the internet - this activated another family of spyware and viruses and, once again, I had machines that took hours to complete processes that need seconds on the same machine sans spyware. I know of several people who, in ignorance, went out and purchased new computers!!

Normally I just reformat the drives on machines that are inundated with this stuff.

In house I use Mcafee managed virus defense - which now has an anti-spyware component rolled into it - and microsoft's free beta. Mcafee 8.0i also has AS functionality - but not as much as specialized anti-spyware packages. In my tests both the MS package and alluria beat spybot - which is nonetheless pretty good. Spywareblaster was another freebee which worked synergistically with spybot.

For free stuff right now I'd suggest the Microsoft one or a combination of several. They change all the time and the anti-spyware business is very competitive.

NEVER install anyting off a pop-up - even if it says it'll save your computer. Alot of the worst crap is spyware installed by anti-spyware ads. I haven't checked adaware in awhile, but when I did it installed a bunch of memory resident popups. Might be better now.
