Tragic, the problem is that the whole human race wants fish, the average person doesn't seem to care were it comes from and there are a hell of a lot of people in the world. What really scares me is that just say Blue fin tuna went extinct tomorrow, how many people would genuinely care? We could well be in the middle of a mass extinction right now and plough on regardless, a new level of awareness is required across humanity but if we in the west, who lets be honest have a generally good standard of living and education cant get our act together, the future looks bleak indeed. The disingenuous nature of the whole commercial fishing trade from ocean to tin of dolphin friendly tuna really concerns me, dolphin friendly.............. is it, really, what about shark and turtle? That small purchase at the supermarket sums up the consumption problem................. how many people really think about by catch issues when getting a 4 for the price of 3 deal? Not many, maybe the members of this forum, maybe some others but not many. As for shark fin soup and medicinal whale shark cartilidge, I wont even start on that or the trade in exotic animal parts such as turtle shells, the list is endless and humanities treatment of the oceans, shameless. Lets hope we can curb our greed before we permanently destroy the things that we share this planet with, its not our planet, we are but one species albeit a species with the ability to destroy other species in a way never seen before, welcome to the Anthropocene, the age of man!
