on a proven killing machine.

Based on my triad design gun I decided to do a Hawaiin sling. I used Ipe wood and added a graphite mix to the bore. The center piece is solid, that is the handle and barrel are all one piece and the sides are lam'd on...did a few test shots in the pool and amazingly it stuck to 3/4 ply at 18' with a %ft RA shaft and 1/2" bands

Looks pretty cool, but since its got a handle, shouldn't you need some sort of trigger? I don't understand how it is loaded and then shot using only one hand?

Haha, well I have never used one nor seen it used, so pardon my obliviousness to the obvious. It did cross my mind but then you couldn't exactly get much stretch outta the bands if using like a sling shot, unless your arms are really long?

This would be a useful idea in Alaska, USA. No spearguns allowed yet but soon, the deciding factor of "what constitutes a speargun" is all down to the trigger mech. Basically no mechanical triggers, hand held yes.

Looks great!

I sold all of my spearguns and switched to using a sling last year. I modified a couple of them to have shooting lines attached to the shaft so I don't loose them in our summer weed cover. I also modified one to mount a camera on it. For the fish we shoot it seems to work out great around here- at least it did yesterday.

If you incorporated a trigger into your design I would think that you'd have made the perfect pan-fish speargun for freshwater. Thin shaft (not to destroy too much meat in the shot), mid-handle design ( for easy maneuvering), no muzzle (easy to swing side-to-side) and limited range- we can't see too far come summer time anyhow. I know that I've seen pictures of old guns that used to be designed that way- from back in the 50's or 60's.

a crude trigger wouldn't be to difficult all thats needed is a hinge, thx for the input

willloomy tits what holds the shaft/bands t/g its sold separately at most dive shop, as they often break or got lost when bands snap...the come in alum. or nylon... i prefer nylon, quieter.

thanks SettingSteel i found a few. your sling looks great i might have to uses your design for mine. i think it would be great for a backup spear lighter and shorter than my three prong pole spear. if you could put a hinge trigger o that it would be boss

It certainly is beautifully design, looks really pretty.

One Question: without the trigger mech, would you not need two hands to to use it, because if your your one hand is holding the handle, how would you then hold the spear? If so, is that not a little awkward?

Hiya lenny and a few others that have asked- here are a few videos of how a hawaiin sling works-think underwater slingshot- its very simplicity is what has made it an icon amongst spearos around the world.

OHHH ok, sorry i had seen plenty of pictures of them, but never seen them in action. I figured it must work like a polespear with a handle. Thanks for enlightening me. They don't seem to be popular for in SA for some reason.

My guess for that would be because all the pelagics you guys go after would die from laughter if you tried to spear them with that, although saying that I'm sure if set up with a slip tip and float line and appropriate rigging there's no reason why a very skilled hunter could not get close enough to make a worth while shot? Might just have some problem penetrating the thick skin of a tuna if only using a 10mm bunjee?:crutch

Steel, please don't think I'm knocking your sling either, it's a master piece and I wish I had the skill to use one!!!

We don't have anything as large as a tuna to shoot around here so the sling works great. Here's mine in action.

settingsteel; nice sling bro. i think installing a hinge or trigger will put that sling into another category same as spearguns i`ve read that in some places only triggerless spearfishing is allowed.. if i have a sling like yours (dreaming of one) I think instead of a trigger what i will install is a wrist support just like the newer slingshots that you can use with little grip and additional power.

there some huge fish have been landed with a hawaiian sling try the world record grouper Grouper, Goliath (Jewfish)
pinoycatfish i like that idea. like a wrist rocket slingshot you could put more powerfull bands on that bad boy

thx again for the kind words and input:friday...We have actually been protyping a "pocket rocket" type sling with the wrist supports, we'll also have a "handleless" model as quite a few spearo's have asked for same design no handle...and since it was of interest to put a trig mech on we've also been running around with that idea too... The problem is the esthetics of the sling...you know being an industrial designer by trade, its gotta look tight, what can i say, nature of the beast:head

thx again for all the input!

thanx for the info willoomy. if i see fish that big here in the philippines it`s either i`ll black out from mixed emotions (excitement and fear) or run above water
