A serious (and cheap) competitor to Paradisia ??

freediver81 from Jaffa's beach tells about a nose-clip and gives a picture of it... this nose-clip would habe been worn by a former champion Erez Beatus...

Amazingly enough I saw such a nose-clip at a comp in Clermont-Ferrand (central France) and tried it on ! And it semt excellent !

The guy had bought it in Marseiille (Le Vieux Plongeur)
I nearly bought it from him...

Who knows this nose-clip ??

Having called the Vieux Plongeur in Marseille, the price of this nose-clip is 2 € !

They told me that there is another one (brand Aquasphere) which has the same concept but the pads are in silicone, which makes it a bit more comfortable... 4.40 € !!

The huge difference in price compared to Paradisia (1/10 to 1/6 !) allows for reflexion...

Up to now I found two DM members using this nose-clip... freediver81 from Jaffa and Manuel from Germany...

But as far as I understood, they might use it over their mask ??

You should not compare this nose clip with the paradisia. With the paradisia you can control how tight you want it. You can equalize at depth etc. With this one you will probably loose air from your nose while equalizing.

I guess it all depends on what you want a nose clip to do for you.

This nose clip is ok for static and dynamic.....in all depth disciplines you need something like the paradisia. I and others have tried the cheap options on like 100 dives but with no succes going deep.............

You can buy those sort of things from any sport or swimming shop here in Sydney and none of them "make the grade" Buy the original or make your own if you want something that works well

I was envisaging to make a stop in Marseille and buy tis alternative nose-clip...

As far as I understood the paradisia is worth the the price, isn't it ?

interesting conclusion from the poll : only 10% of deep divers use a nose-clip for deep diving...

it has probably something to do with AIDA regulations which up to now forbid the use of nose-clips during competitions... and also with the technological state-of-the-art of the "fluid" goggles...

Yes, I believe it's simply because you can walk to any dive store and pick up a good mask for 30-40e and go diving.

Where as for nose clip you need to
-Find a way to get a paradisia. Depending on where you live, this is a project in weeks or months and the cost is from 50e up
-Order fluid goggles from the internet or make them your self. If you buy them, we're talkin 150e-300e
-Learn to dive with this configuration (it's not as simple as it sounds, it requires very good control over the soft palate to do right)

In addition, at least for me, the mask protects my face from the cold. I get problems with my forehead sinus very easily and it's always worse in cold water. With a mask and a hood pulled over it, I can get at least some protection...

Nose clips allow you to equalize hands free and saves some air from mask equalizing. But honestly, in moderate depths (that most of us dive in), the amount of air is negliable and pinching your nose is not that much trouble, it just takes practise. And you can learn to equalize hands free with a mask as well.

Where the fluid goggles/nose clip really shine is CNF, FI (both need hands free) and deep CWT dives. The majority of us do moderate CWT dives, so the poll seems to reflect that fairly accurately.

95% of my needs are swimming underwater in a swimming pool and my present nose-clip began to leak slightly...

Having tried above nose-clip, it is highly sufficient for dynamic and static...

It is a bit ridiculous to have a paradisia and not to use it deep ; c'est un marteau pilon pour écraser une mouche...

I was just trying to give you an advise, saying you should buy the paradisia, as buying the other one will cost you as much if you go to Marseille for that.
I might stop trying to help if you have this kind of reaction.

About your "have you no other fish to fry than talking to say nothing?" which I translate for non french speaking.
I found that very funny coming from you who are posting in 5 different places to ask the same thing.

but for your information the train to Nice makes a stop in Marseille and "Le Vieux Plongeur" is a sightseeing and a pleasant stroll for any freediver, all the more since we have no equivalent in Paris...

you should not waste your time (and mine) with such counterproductive comments...

Up to now I have not yet been convinced of the necessity to get such a costly pair of goggles if you do CNF... all the more since you close your eyes most of the time !

Having a pair of normal goggles filled with a saline solution 0.9 g/l :waterwork , isn't it sufficient to see the cable, and where to grasp the target ?

I recently got aching in my left ear doing repeated duckdives in a pool with 3.30 m depth...

Last summer in Nice I got an otitis. On mornings I was accompanying kids snorkeling ; I did then repeated duckdives at very short depths. On evenings I did normal freediving trainings with sled or constant weight...

I feel that my morning sessions were worse for my ears than my evening sessions... When you do a duckdive, you have in a short time a big rate of descent and your ear is more sensitive to quick variations of pressure than to the pressure itself...

Where the fluid goggles/nose clip really shine is CNF...

Precisely, I envisage to do CNF next week in Nice (this year I mainly trained without fins in DNF...). I feel it is more difficult to put your hand at your nose without fins than with fins...

Since Bernard stood me up in Nice in May, I did not buy from him a paradisia nose-clip...

I waited till the Calanques' cup and bought the cheap competitor (2 € !) - I took two of them, a blue one and a green one ... -

Now I can draw some conclusions...

I first used it in pool static at Luminy in Marseille and in dynamic with swimming goggles...

I enjoyed doing my static with this nose clip and no goggles... the contact of the water on my eye lids is very pleasant and very relaxing...

I spent then 10 days in Nice and trained on my own, since CIPA had trouble with its boat...

I experienced some kind of CNF with following equipment :

. a shorty 2 mm thick
. 1 kg around my waist
. 2 kg around my neck (2 pairs of ankle weights : 4 x 0.500 kg)
. the 2 € nose-clip
. a pair of XP Seal goggles
. a front snorkel
. no fins but a pair of plastic shoes
. a pair of swimming paddles (TYR Medium size)
. my beloved D3

the water was about 26°C with a thermocline at - 13 m...

I departed from the beach and swam within the limits of the watched zone...

My front snorkel allowed me to relax completely before diving...

I was able to do Valsalvas without touching my nose...

I did some just before the duckdive and was able to compensate during the dive...

the bottom was about 14 m... I was neutral at - 10 m...

my swimming paddles were excellent tools for fitness...

I was very surprised that I had no suction problem with my XP Seal goggles at - 15 m ! they are hermetic...

Coming back to Paris, I went on training with my nose-clip and my XP Seals...

I did some duckdives with 2 kg around my neck, trying to tune my lungs filling so as to stay at the bottom...

I noticed at - 3 m that bubbles were escaping my nose without being conscious that I was blowing... It was kind of unconscious Valsalva...

I concluded that at - 10 m and - 15 m, I would lose more air since my nose-clip does not close my nostrils perfectly...

Conclusion : now I really need to buy a Paradisia !
