Has anyone ever considered using some sort of modified line winder attached to their gun, instead of a reel? This may be difficult to describe so bear with me.

Picture the pieces of plastic used to wind up line for a kid's kite... ok, now make that out of wood or aluminum and make it a bit longer and attach one end to the bottom of the gun. When the line needs to come off, it can just wind off, with no moving parts, and also a lower horizontal profile. Maybe a weak clip can hold tension in the line until it's shot.

Any thoughts???

wind it on by hand like with a kite. It's not like a spearfishing reel is used to fight the fish, it just stores and lets out the line. This is just a crazy thought I had, and i thought i might share.

Great quote by the way, Inigo.

oh okay, i thought you were going to use it to fight the fish w/ and got confused...

as for signature, i actually used your picture of that spearo on my senior page... :p lol, might owe you some overdue rep

sweet. I got it from some site and photoshopped it a bit, so it's not really mine either... where you headed to school next year?

i too photoshopped it some so i didnt feel as bad :D. ill either be going to Spokane Community College or College of Idaho. I am going to try and play tennis at one or the other. might have to go someplace on the coast in order to get some real spearing in though

yeah, I was wondering where you were fishing out there... I fly fished a couple times with my cousing in Livingston, MT but didn't see much opportunity for spearing. I'll prob have to put spearing on hold too; I'm headed to Notre Dame, so unless I can find some good freshwater spots in Lake Michigan... I still have this summer to land a few biggies!! : D

yea there is great fly fishing up here... i spear a huge lake, google Lake Pend Oreille. it just sucks that that fish that i can get are all trash fish... but its still a blast. ive heard of some huge carp being in the great lakes if thats any consolation to you. Go Fighting Irish! lol

Thats great, maybe I will take my gun... : ) I hope it can handle it though, it's all homemade lol. I have some pics up somewhere on here (DIY section i think). I'm still funbling for some sort of reel. I've tried making one, but to no avail. Buying one is way out of my price range, so I may try to modify a cheap fly reel.

is it the 100cm open muzzle with the howling wolf motif? that looks great, hows the accuracy/range? ive contemplated building a gun but my woodworking skills could quickly become a factor, someday though, someday. i read a thread on here somewhere about using a fly rod as a reel... cant remember where though, sorry.

yeah that's the one. Haven't shot it yet!!! I know, i know, terrible. I still have to figure out a reel situation, then balance the thing. I hope it shoots well, hehe. My buddy just got a boat, so I'll be doing some open water fishing this summer, and I'm hoping for a big blue fish or a mahi mahi if the water gets warm enough. I've seen those threads too, so I think it will work. Building the gun was a bit of work, and ended up being just as expensive as buying one... oh well. 8-/
